Back Amazon CEO hints possible layoff wave in annual company letter. Here’s what he says

“We also reprioritized where to spend our resources, which ultimately led to the hard decision to eliminate 27,000 corporate roles. There are a number of other changes that we’ve made over the last several months to streamline our overall costs, and like most leadership teams, we’ll continue to evaluate what we’re seeing in our business and proceed adaptively," said the company CEO in his letter to shareholders.

What are you talking about? You can't just halt the H-1B and it's not even the problem - that is for only a small fraction of employees (only 14000 applications from 2020-2022). And it's virtually impossible for governments to make any major changes to immigration programs, especially in a short time frame. Immigration system has been broken for years.

That's like saying the board should immediately terminate Jassy.

Amazon is desperate to stop burning their cash (which they've been irresponsibly doing for 2 years now!). However, layoffs are usually a last resort before other expense reductions. Meanwhile Amazon has been sitting on so much underutilized property over the last few years. They should sell off offices, break leases at a short-term loss, and then consider more layoffs to low performing business units. And then revise their hiring strategy to focus on quality versus quantity.

Makes perfect sense to layoff to make more money. Companies exist to make money and not take are of its employees.

Foreign workers are cheaper labor than local workers and may or may not be better skilled. But they're probably the least of the problem here - cheaper to hire. The biggest expenses are: cost of sales, R&D, fulfillment, real estate, and then employees. There are also lots of qualified local workers, who don't want to do the work of foreigners, and who can find other jobs. It's fine to keep hiring foreign workers once expenses are reduced sufficiently.

Ok. So they aren't confident with their ability to do financial planning/forecasting, org planning and will resort to mass layoffs to correct their mistakes. That sounds really clever! I thought Bezos had an ability to see 5 years ahead into the future?

You also don't need market improvements to get better offers - they're already there. Layoffs will take different shape at different companies. How many layoffs did Walmart have again?

It can go both ways though. It is possible that qualified people will be motivated to quit and jump to a better offer if the market improves.

What is important now is that it is fair H1B and foreign workers are no longer hired. The prospect does not look good. Companies will layoff more.
