Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

My job did me dirty

I work at macys and Just recently, they decide to treat me horrible. I am a student so my availability is limited. I had told 4 mangers about my schedule change and none of them did the change. I had told one manger that if it’s ok for me to leave early for the times, they have schedule me closing due to my class time. She said it was fine. So during the times that had to go back for my reliability, I would always put schedule change. Unfortunately somebody has been denying them, and my reliability went down. Super bad. A lady from hr came up to me to talk to me about my reliability. I had told her what was going on that I was a student and I told four different managers about my schedule change and they all told me that they were going to run to the lady from hr. The lady from HR then goes that no one has ever came up to her about anything. so that really took me off how there was no communication the matter how many times I told the managers about my schedule. The lady from HR then goes ahead and starts lecturing me how I cannot leave early even though I already told her what was going on and that the manager said that it was OK for me to leave early due to my class time. She then went ahead and threaten how this was going to affect my promotion. I don’t want any problems at work so I offered if it’s OK they could just drop me to flex or part-time and she said she wasn’t sure if there was any positions and that she didn’t know any of the answers to my questions.
Now im flex. I have no hours they took away my current position so now I’m just general selling, without them telling me or even disclosing it. I’m so disappointed and frustrated.
Also, I wanted to use my pto since I graduate this may. I had put in my PTO two months in advance (march) . They had denied it. I was so confused because it let me submit the request so I don’t know why they denied it. I went ahead and resubmitted my PTO and then he denied it again, so I decided to open HR case. after a few days, HR finally got back to me and said that since I am basically in eligible for PTO, they had paid me out my hours on 4/1, but I never received that payment. I had about 40 hours saved up and a few flexible holidays. I don’t even have any of that and I don’t understand why they kept on denying my request. If supposedly, they paid out my hours on April 1 if I had submitted a request of PTO, mid March it doesn’t make sense to me.
Another thing, last week one of the managers made me take out, some really heavy fixtures out of the stock rooms for some visit by myself. I had told her that I needed help and then she said we’ll see. She also kept on rushing me, and I was trying to do the best as I could. That day, I left with back pain about a few days later I finally got a day off and I was doing my normal routine at home and I got a sharp pain in my back that I wasn’t able to sit up straight and that I had to lay down. I was in constant pain for five days I was almost sent to the ER because of how unbearable the pain was. and I knew that this pain was for my job because I was lifting and moving fixtures from floor to floor by myself without any help.
I don’t understand why they are treating me this way if all I’ve done for them was everything that they asked for and I even went above and beyond for this minimum wage job. I know now that I am not appreciated. I am overworked. I am being ignored for what?
There is so much miscommunication between the managers and honestly some of them don’t even know how to lead, and they are very unprofessional. This sucks .

Retail is a very toxic workplace, there are plenty of jobs at actual good companies that require no experience. Working at Macys is a rock bottom kind of thing. Go unionize or something

I am a former MBA and I have seen colleagues treated like this by their managers. I always fought for the colleagues thus making me the bad guy with my peers but I didn’t care. Sadly so many stores with horrible managers. I feel for you and they totally did you wrong. Wish you had opened a case sooner. And correct, HR is no longer in store. It must have been the MBA who spoke with you but again, HR is not part of their role. That is supposed to be through your direct people leader but they just pass off to the MBA’s. So glad I left the stores. Horrible culture. Good luck to you if you decide to stay. You are going to need it.

By your post it seems like you were FT, correct? If you are full time, you can not ask for a schedule accommodation to go to school. Also, somebody from HR? There is no longer HR in the store. Maybe it was the MBA?

I don't even need to read your TL;DR to be able to tell you that Macy's does not adjust schedules for personal reasons, especially when it impacts closing coverage that way. Being a student doesn't get you privileges over other employees. Use your self-service and availability tools. Otherwise, the job may not be for you.

First off, don’t ki-l yourself for this bad job and people who obviously do not appreciate you. Look for a better job. You are not going to be working at Macys your whole life. Any time you get hurt on the job, file an accident report. And yes the management has really downgraded, very few good managers these days. You come across way too nice to me. They are taking advantage of you. Hope you get a better job.

Everything this last poster wrote is true. I have had the same experiences. Its the truth. I have lived through the same things this person has described. The place is a mad house.
