Thread regarding Micron Technology Inc. layoffs

Story Time!

Hello everyone. I don't care if you are for or against Micron. Let me tell you my story. I knew a guy who's life revolved around Micron. He was a T4 and he worked on average 60 hours a week for the 5 years that I knew him. He made a buttload of cash doing this. He bought a huge house, married a beautiful woman, and had his first child. He bought a lot of big boy toys (boats, trucks, atv's) and told everyone that he would retire early because of his work ethic. A few years ago, before the pandemic, he was hanging his Christmas lights and he fell off the roof of his giant house and cracked his head on the pavement and died. It was a very sad time for everyone who knew him and a great loss to the company. That week, everyone who knew him took a moment of silence. The next week, it was back to business as usual. I doubt that many people even remember him by now. He taught me a very valuable lesson. He devoted his life to Micron, (although money was his main motivation) he was a team player. Unfortunately, he never got to play with any of his toys. He left a distressed widow and a beautiful child who will never know her talented father. The giant house the bought was the end of him. My point is, always keep in mind that Micron is your job, not your life. Every job at Micron has different expectations but if they ever tell you that you need to put your career ahead of your personal life, maybe it is time to move on. Also, if you have a wife and/or child, maybe only work as much as you need to and spend as much time with your loved one's as you can, because you never know when your number is up. Good Luck to all you Micronites!

Re: Divorce rates for Micron lifers

Some of the old timers had a joke that went something like “the first marriage gets you to M4”

"The giant house he bought was the end of him"...

You sure the house was the end of him or was it a lack of safety precautions while working at heights? I also doubt that he was on a great path to retire early if he was paying for a huge house, boats, trucks, and atv's on a T4 pay rate. If you plan to retire early you need to be maxing out your 401K contributions not buying toys. Even if he was averaging 20 hours a week of OT for 5 years I question if you could support retirement savings and the 'big boy toys'. Also not sure that this kind of OT would fly in any department.

Has anyone followed the Micron divorce trend from those who prioritize Micron?

He would have been safe at work. Moral of the story is do not leave your cubicles.

and told everyone that he would retire early because of his work ethic. *

I have a lot of question marks about his work ethic and his judgement in general. You put safety harness working on a roof, wouldn't you? Now, I have to ask myself, how many shortcuts this man took working with dangerous gases, acids and other substances while at Micron (which btw is right next to my house).

Sorry for the loss of human being and the pain for his family, though.

What type of life you should lead,
It’s just a personal choice.
Don’t regret what you have chosen for this life.
That’s life…..
