3M is not a psychologically safe place to work

I have seen seen managers yell at employees who disagree with them. They berate employees for no reason. The level of narcissism among the senior leaders it is impossible for many to admit they are wrong or refuse to listen to advice or opinions from direct reports with years of experience. I am sure if a consultant gave the same advice they would accept it! In 15 years I have seen too many great managers leave (mostly those from other companies with much experience) because the bad managers (mostly long term 3Mers) feel threatened by them and make it a miserable place to work.

I am a very strong person who worked for another large company before working at 3M. Every company has its issues but the level of toxicity at 3M is not normal. I agree with the advice if you do not feel psychologically safe to leave if you can before your mental health is affected, assuming you can. I waited too long and my health was adversely affected by the toxicity of 3M. I did tell HR I did not feel psychologically safe and also told HR other people I work with do not feel psychologically safe because of the same leader. HR responded by saying they needed more proof. I wish I had recorded the meetings where the head of our department yelled at people, jumped all over someone for expressing an idea this leader did not like, micromanaged everyone, and much more. How else do you prove you do not feel psychologically safe other than to record meetings? Who wants to work somewhere that says they want to create a psychologically safe environment but will do nothing when several people state they do not feel psychologically safe?

I’m sorry to see this post, and so many people (good 3M employees) experiencing the same thing. I’m in TTS and I definitely feel it isn’t a psychologically safe place to work. It starts with the CIDO (he is horrible to his directs and skip levels), and continues with his direct SVP leadership team. These folks came from outside and are all here just for their paycheck. They don’t care about the TTS employees, they don’t care about the company, and they don’t care about 3M’s customers. I really wish we still had a good leader like John T. He wasn’t perfect, but he definitely cared about the team as people.

I got laid off a week ago. Now I'm enjoying a planned vacation before my next adventure. Although my notice was unexpected (I was hoping I could stay until the closing of the subsidiary) I'm waking up early, fully energized. A completely different story compared to a month ago.... I did not want to wake up and log in.

If you are staying because you need your severance (minimum required by law or expecting an extra), build your plan to stay mentally healthy. YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IS FIRST.

For those of you long timmers, our young & new to the real world newbies that think 3M is psychologically hard to be at needs to see just how bad it can be outside. 3M is a soft workplace, where people are coddled and kept well past thier point of usefulness. It's to the point that certain people will not get fired no matter how bad they are (protected classes)

It's a hard world, some people are mean, not everyone is going to respect you.... get over it, toughen up and move forward.

My manager makes 0 effort to connect with us on a human level. Literally not one 1-1, no goals, no "how you doing?". They are essentially a bot parroting vague directives from above and managing up the work we do in the trenches. It sucks, but I mentally checked out once I convinced myself I hold no value as an employee. Oh and xanax helps. Once I get laid off I'm sure my mental health will improve significantly but going to hang on as long as possible. Good luck all..

The most toxic senior leaders I know at 3M would never have been hired by other Fortune 500 companies for the same or similar positions. They believe in leadership through fear and do not care about helping their teams grow.

We allow and promote a cfo who talks down to women and erratically varies between charming and tyrannical with men which is not a safe work atmosphere.

I was an external hire and left the company for a better opportunity. Long-time 3Mers have no frame of reference that allows them to see how toxic the company culture is which is directly correlated with leadership behaviors. They either just tolerate it (it’s the way it’s always been) or they go along to get along and perpetuate the negative behaviors. That’s why 3M will never have the culture they say they do on paper.

I had mostly positive interactions with everyone except SVPs and above. It makes me shudder thinking of all the disingenuous leaders I encountered.

3M spends (or at least did spend) much money and time recruiting talent from other companies. As note above, many leave when they realize how toxic 3M is and when they do not feel psychologically safe at. 3M I have been yelled at by an SVP, berated, micromanaged, nitpicked and more. I joked to others that I have EAP on speed dial. I am not psychologically safe and others on my team are afraid of this SVP.

People, like me, who have worked for “normal” companies realize very quickly an SVP with 10+ years of experience can do almost anything he or she wants to do to employees, especially new employees.

It is sad this behavior is allowed and even condoned across all of 3M.

So much truth in the statement header. I've seen panic attacks from team members. I've seen people go out for inpatient treatment following too much stress at work. I've seen people get into physical altercations because of the stress that is coming down from senior leadership. This company needs to get the data from their EAP group. It's all there. The EAP personnel are leaving because 3Mers are spreading their toxic traits to them. 20 years with 3M and I've never seen this type of environment with zero to no light at the end of the tunnel.

Literally had to have a corporate scientist tell my TD the same thing I told my TD several times because I am not credible enough for some reason, despite being an expert in my field. Management always triple questions anything that is brought up to them. What happened to trusting your employees?
