Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Morale

What is the morale and attrition like in your team these days?

The BU I'm in pretty much is waiting for severance.

More articles came out today (see Seeking Apha) saying this deal has only 50/50 chance. More uncertainty doesn’t exactly boost morale.

If you tell me that he negotiated that up from 10M I’d be impressed.

I want feefty one million, or I'm going to make REALLY bad decisions running this company.

The deal dragging on, limited budgets and turnover all has an impact.

he's biding his time to get a big CiC payout.

You don’t have to be smart as a fox to figure that out. If you tell me that he negotiated that up from 10M I’d be impressed.

Everyone is weary. Even the ones most excited about the merge sound a bit worried with one extension after another and phases II III IV and so forth. I mean just read people’s responses here.

While the current CEO is smart and know what he's doing

The current CEO has fostered and enabled the jingoistic culture of incompetence.
He is smart as a fox and knows that he's doing: he's biding his time to get a big CiC payout.

I mean people act like jobs don't exist. I got hired pretty quickly and have seen ton of LinkedIn posts from people getting hired. Mostly recruiters and PMs are the ones not able to find jobs currently but other roles are doing fine.

Most of the tenured ones in our group are resting and vesting on several fronts - Bonus, RSU's, a handful of retention bonuses, and perhaps even a severance. In the meantime we are content to sit back and laugh at the latest amateur decision of the day, most often from the Sr Director and above level. No time for quiet quitting, or actual quitting, when you can get entertained and take their money at the same time.

"Also if you are waiting for bonus, why not wait for severance too?"

A few reasons I can think of. One the merger is months away if ever. Two I would rather look for a job now than in winter. Three my bonus was 8 weeks worth of pay. That's enough to take a month off and still be ahead, which is exactly what I am going to do. Winter is over. This will be my best Spring ever!

Imagine getting all angry at demoralized peers only to be the first one to be let go on Day One. Show a little bit of empathy will you?

It's been a mix for my peers on in my team. Some are down and demoralized either by some of the many recent changes and/or by a sense of uncertainty and impending doom, while others have just accepted the inevitability of some of the negatives of what's likely coming with or without a Broadcom deal, because let's be honest, although it would likely be worse with Broadcom than without, it is highly likely that layoffs are coming either way. Folks who've been with VMware for quite a few years aren't going anywhere without a package/severance, but as you might expect, others with less vested time are either looking for another employer while they are still employed - always easier to find a job while you still have one - or just biding their time to see what comes.

I decided early on I didn't want to work at a place under the stress of not knowing what the outcome would be with the acquisition. But even before then things were weird for me. Seems like that as soon as Pat left morale started to plummet. While the current CEO is smart and know what he's doing, he just does not have the temperament to be a personable CEO. 50% of my old team is still there. I worry about them. I hope the deal doesn't go through for their sake.

If you are waiting for severance or quite quitting, GET THE FU-K OUT! You are the problem, not the solution! Show some fu----g pride and level up your personal integrity!

Oddly, if we weren’t being acquired we would have already had a large helping of layoffs, like every other tech company who has found the secret to increasing their stock price this year.

Use the time wisely.

Mostly quiet quitting

Morale now compared to even a year ago is in the gutter. Most people in my BU seem closed off and suspicious, I’d say ever since June people really started to disengage compared to when Pat was still here

What will morale be if this merge doesn’t push through coz it’s looking more and more like it won’t? Wish we could get some clarity soon so we can plan accordingly.

Quite and go where? Also if you are waiting for bonus, why not wait for severance too? It’s larger than the bonus for most ppl, may be except for sales folks. If you are still here. Like me you are here for severance or others reasons such as visa , bla bla. So stop kidding yourself with mass exodus after bonus.

I already left but check in regularly with folks. I agree once April 15th is done then VMware will see more attrition. Lots of folks I know were just waiting for bonus before giving their notice.

Moral is down the toilet for sure. Lots of blaming and figure-pointing going on. I am at my wit's end with this stuff.

In the cr-pper here. I'm not saying my team was the best ever, but we consistently exceeded our numbers and gave a damn. Now we meet the numbers and don't give a damn after that.

I expect that once bonuses are paid we will see a lot of my team quit.
