Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

GFES

Does anyone believe for a second that hiring almost 200 heads in SE Asia to support sustaining tasks at the fabs isn’t done with the intention to demolish onsite process engineering teams? Can’t wait until layer owners are all on Bengaluru time. I wonder if I can take a page out of Tommy C’s book and “Pivot” to a wrench turner job.

The problem for GF is when they realize this outsourcing to low-cost geos is a broken/failed strategy, they have already created such a bad reputation for themselves that nobody other than green new college hires will come to GF and work because of their horrible reputation of paying low and not caring about their employees, treating them like disposable widgets. GF is all in on this low-cost geo staffing, it will fail, and GF will lose many customers because of it. Better get yourself a seat on a lifeboat quickly because the GF-Titanic ship is sinking!!!

Yes attrition has been sky high compared to peers. And they love it. Think to your own teams and how they will backfill a position of someone who left. But they never do. Then another person leaves and same cycle repeats.

@dkh is right. They have no serious plans to hire in US or other site locations. If anything their plan is NOT to hire people at these sites…. It’s crystal clear the hidden agenda and strategy

For sure outsourcing is the strategy and outsourcing away from fab sites, even Singapore is impacted by this where they will be outsourced to Malaysia and Bulgaria. Execs are actually happy when attrition rates at the fab sites increase, this means they don't have to have a layoff and pay severance packages but instead the person just leaves and then they can be replaced in a low-cost geo. This strategy is clear and even the execs are stating it publicly now. Everyone should prepare appropriately so if enough attrition doesn't happen and fast enough, they will drop the axe and layoff whatever number they need to meet their salary reduction targets. If you sit back and do nothing it is your own fault for not being prepared if they lay you off, everyone needs a plan "B".

I don't think they are having trouble hiring people in the US now....they aren't trying.

@fmq and the messaging is inconsistent. Wasn't the original claim a few weeks ago that it was for better support and quicker resolution of issues?

To everyone here, even the tough guy who is pro-GF and calls everyone whiners - the writing's on the wall.

GF in December: Let's have a layoff
GF in March: We're having trouble hiring people, we need to offshore

Yes it is a trick. If you get asked to train or educate someone on what and how you do your job over there or other foreign site; you should prepare to get the axe

Been saying it for awhile, GF isn’t investing in US operations. Downsizing and Offshoring.

@OP They're just hoping enough people are gullible or trapped (visas, families and such) until they can complete the transition
