People that vote union in retail are nuts! They eat up your wages with union dues and the union rep rubs elbows with HR and screws you over. NOT worth it!
It’s worth it if you don’t want to get fired for d*mb reasons cuz management doesn’t like you and makes up something bogus with AP to get you fired. It’s good if you are making a lot of money and Macy’s doesn’t try to get rid of you because of that since you have seniority. Macys always trying to get rid of the people that are getting paid a lot since they have been with the company for many years but they can’t do that in union. And you get raises every year. I worked in nonunion store and my raises were better in union store. And then you also get paid union holidays where you don’t have to work even if scheduled and no points. Depends on what contract you have for other benefits.
There are two kinds of people who union works well for them.
- Those who just want a stable job. Just come in, keep your head down, and collect your paycheck. The pay won’t spike because union value seniority and wage progression - meaning doesn’t maid you are amazing at your job, you won’t get more than what the progression said you should get based on your year of service.
- Those who lazy and just want to do as little as possible. They will get to keep their jobs. They will stay at the line between getting fired and saved by the union contract. These people are not bad but because they are doing a very bare minimum, other people will always have to pickup the slack.
Now the pro side of the union is is that while the state law is great, you have another layer of protection. I have yet to witness the company doing anything out right illegal or play favorite but I have witnessed managers, store managers, and even division managers go out of their way to treats an employee unfairly and without union that employee would have been let go.
The downside is that if you are driven and always thrive, you won’t get a raise because of that. If you get a raise, those who have more seniority but lazy like I mentioned earlier, will get that raise too.
Almost all stores in the Seattle area are union, except for Bellevue. In my opinion, if you come to work and do your job, you don't need it. Our State labor laws enable paid family leave and sick days. The union did not get any of this for us. Union dues are pretty steep. I would not vote in a union.
