Thoughts on the unlimited Tech job layoffs

It sure is nasty out there with no apparent letup in sight.

I got layed off last summer. Been surving doing small construction jobs. Have sent out about 150 reumes. No call backs or emails yet. Pretty tough out there when you are a white male older than 50 years and Disabled to boot. I'm thinking about getting back in to Construction full time. I framed when I was younger, way before nail g-ns came out. I enjoy building homes but swinging a Carpenters hammer all day is wear and tear on your body.

It's tough out there for any American in tech these days. If your job isn't getting off-shored or outsourced, you are still at risk if you make any kind of decent salary outside of management.

I feel you. I am also part of the I.T.-mageddon. I was laid off from a contract in December right before Christmas. I was given the benefit of a month's notice so I immediately began applying for new opportunities. I am still yet to find something. I have lots of relevant experience but, with that background, it's obvious I am a "bit" older. I did have a job offer that was supposed to begin on March 1 but, coincidentally, after I sent a photo in to be used on the company badge (which I would need to log in to my company laptop) the offer went away. I was told that they were experiencing a "hiring freeze". That could be the legitimate reason but, after checking out the company board out here, I am not so sure. I am 55 - will turn 56 later this year. I look a few years younger but I feel that isn't enough. Not to mention, I built my career on an Associate's Degree, more college later for specific topics and lots of on-the-job experience which I proactively sought out. I developed a reputation for being able to pick things up quickly. That attribute has kept me working for 22+ years. I don't think it will be enough this time so I am looking at my options to pivot. I refuse to go into any (more) debt to go back to college at this late stage of the game. I registered a business and am working on building that up. I will figure something out. I always do but it's like the Hunger Games out there right now. Good luck!

Sadly, this is story of modern America, or anywhere else for that matter. Middle class pushed below poverty line. One household income used to be enough to feed a family of five, while providing for a decent house and a wagon. They didn't need to have an advanced degree. Slowly, two people had to work to survive. These days, two people with multiple jobs or with advanced degree couldn't raise a single child comfortable. Let alone the struggles of single moms. We can't keep a stable job for 10 years straight. By the time you reach the "ever-extending" retirement age would have at least ventured through 3 career changes, probably racked up few medical conditions and divorces.
