@ ggvy+1ljUTcL6, I was the person who made the comment about double digit inflation. And you are correct. Just because a government entity says inflation is whatever percentage doesn’t mean that’s what you will personally feel. But if you think that anybody in the world right now is personally dealing with inflation in the low single digits or that their 4-5% merit increase has in some way kept pace with their loss of purchasing power you need to reconsider your thought process.

"if it’s anything short of double digits it’s a loss to inflation." - only if you don't actually know what inflation is, and how it's measured. There isn't a one-to-one correlation between the reported rate of inflation and your cost of living.

But really, employers haven't talked about the "cost of living increase" for at least a decade - most probably longer. What matters is not tracking against COL percentages, but tracking laterally across your industry.
