Thread regarding Lenovo layoffs

Cost-cutting measures

I hope at least that the cuts won't be big, but I'm already trying to find a new opportunity somewhere else. Are layoffs inevitable when the leadership decides to cut costs?

If they follow the trend of the past years, even some of the employees in the service teams at Shenzhen in China will get laidoff. The only safe people are the favorites - they will be among the last to go! In 10 years at Lenovo, I have never seen any of the favorites get laidoff.

If you get laid off, be extremely thankful. There is nothing more that looking in your manager's face telling him he F'ed up and that you are happy to be gone. It is such relief handing over the garbage laptop, sign the paperwork, and walk off to your better job getting that big severance check. My manager was so pi---d off learning what he was getting rid of and even more pi---d off that Lenovo was far more replaceable than me. I did send him a message 6 months later when he got fired (not laid off) asking how things were going. I knew why he got fired because I still had friends that were Execs and that he tried blaming me after I was laid off for failures.

If they got rid of most of the useless middle-management and cut the ridiculous travel budget so executives couldn't wine and dine on the company's dollar, there would be more than enough to keep the company going for some time.

Any info on departments? Mostly sales or is it “across the board”?

US workers are the #1 cost cutting measure. They are trying to make it sound small that it will only be 750 people. That is not the real number. They will layoff a lot more in the US and hire more in China.
