I still can't believe that I was laid off after so much effort invested here. I have always taken care to keep my skills updated and I hope that I will be able to get a new job soon. What worries me is the possibility of getting an equally good or better paying job and benefits in today's job market? I hope I won't end up in a situation where I have to accept a much worse offer.

Young - go back to school - get to do some real stuff - look at AI or Quantum Computing , see startups there and try to keep up.
For these old guys that been here 20+ years - we build products that were state of the art back 20-30 years ago and we proud of it making sure it can last longer but it's not about money - never was - even so money was and is great.
So find something that really gets you going , you have fun with and enjoy it .. if that is IT or not it's your decision.
Chances are you will find something with much better pay and benefits, I was worried about the same thing when I got laid off but found a much much better job with way better pay and better benefits that were cheaper. Don't worry, you'll be fine.
you will probably get hired back by Dell in 4 months. I've seen it happen many times.
Timing is often not great, but try your best to make lemonade out of lemons. Typically those who switch companies scale financially faster than those who stay at the same company. You have now experience, and sounds like you have kept updating your skill set so keep going forward!
Dude if you’re still relatively young I’d look for completely different career. With off shore and out sourcing etc IT jobs aren’t as prestigious like 30 yrs. Knowing what know now I’d never got in it.
