Thread regarding SAP layoffs

Copycat layoffs

Laying off employees turns out to be infectious. And that makes it all the more insidious.

Indeed, these tech layoffs (as well as a recent round of media layoffs, I should add) are what the Stanford professor Jeffrey Pfeffer, an expert on organizational behavior, has termed “copycat layoffs.”

(...)

A better copycat trend would be for firms to proactively and aggressively avoid layoffs, as they did before becoming enthralled with “lean” management practices and focused on near-term returns in the 1970s. “Decades ago, layoffs were exceptional and done only in the face of pretty severe economic contractions,” Pfeffer told me. “You want to treat people like you treat any of your assets. Don’t hire and fire based on short-term considerations.” Or better yet, think about picking workers up when other firms are putting them down.

There is no way SAP would have had the guts to start the trend on their own. They are simply dirty immoral copy cats. Say goodbye to your top 100 employer or their perfect glassdoor rating. They need to be disgraced for this act, even though im not impacted so far but i feel the process that was done is completely chaotic and lack of sympathy.
Right now HR has put it a mandate on the managers that they are not allowed to talk about the layoffs. wooow really?? What do you expect them to say? So and so got lost in the forest while hiking??

during the pandemic, all companies discovered that employees could be more productive at home and talked about how wonderful this was
now they all ask them to return to office as this is more productive

same for hiring during pandemic with such crazy numbers. now all firing people

as you said, they just mimic each other behaviors

just think of employees who changed company during the pandemic and now got fired. what a disaster

Apple & Tim Cook are eating FAANG’s lunches. Cook is a Supply Chain/Operations pro who adheres to closed form rigor, he is not a bean counter or sales clown. That makes an enormous difference.

I read some speculation somewhere that big companies will look at what FAANG is doing and if they layoff then other companies will follow -- This is partly to do with company image. Why would one apply to a company that recently did layoffs? Well.. if all big tech did layoffs then now they're all on equal footing and they would no longer have that perception.
It also appeases shareholders as cutting operational costs equates to more profit.
Of course these are not the only reasons, but makes one question if layoffs are really necessary or if the company has an agenda to follow.

Agreed and I think the (same) lay off consultants are in great demand these days.
