CVS is closing its South Monroe Street location in Tallahassee on March 16.

The dr-g store retailer said all prescriptions will be transferred to the CVS Pharmacy at 1300 Apalachee Parkway "to ensure that patients continue to have uninterrupted access to pharmacy care," along with any other CVS pharmacy location.

In a statement to the Tallahassee Democrat, CVS said the following:

"Maintaining access to pharmacy services in the communities we serve is an important factor we consider when making store closure decisions. Other factors include local market dynamics, population shifts, a community’s store density, and ensuring there are other geographic access points to meet the needs of the community.

We have 13 CVS Pharmacy locations remaining in Tallahassee, including two MinuteClinic and CVS HealthHUB locations, which offer expanded health and wellness products and services. Our teams will continue to provide the community with outstanding service at these locations. We also offer prescription home delivery service to eligible patients through CVS.com and the CVS Pharmacy app to provide additional convenient access to medications."

Other pharmacy providers in the immediate impact area are responding to fill in service gaps created by the closure, including Bond Community Health Center. CEO Dr. Temple Robinson said the facility has a retail pharmacy license.

"We are preparing to extend our pharmacy services to current CVS customers," Robinson said. "We want to ensure that our neighbors have access to reliable pharmacy services."

Before the location was a CVS arrived, it was an Eckerd Pharmacy and retail store operating at the same location, which opened in March 1998. The Eckerd chain of pharmacies was sold to CVS in 2004.

Catherine Slusser joins a chorus of unhappy residents reacting to the CVS closure. She lives about a mile and a half away from the South Monroe Street location. She's been going there for decades.

Slusser has grown fond of the CVS staff, including the store manager. The store is often a stop along her morning walks, where she and her sweetheart pick up trash in the store's parking lot. The staff created a community and neighborhood pharmacy; it was their way of giving back in return.

"It's always been a huge asset for me," Slusser said. "It kind of leaves us in the lurch down here on the south side."
