Huge turnover

I'm trying to figure out why my store is having a much higher turnover than usual. It looks like nobody wants to work here anymore.

What is the situation like in your store and what do you think is the biggest reason why people are staying shorter and shorter?

@8hge. If in California contact the California State Labor Board. What your manager did is illegal in California. Some Sears managers tried he same thing and got in trouble with the Labor Board. I know. I was one of the employees who filed a formal complaint against Sears and the manager.

Nope nobody likes it, become a product experts for the whole store. Macy's doesn't train colleagues to become product experts. Colleagues are lost and confuse when customers ask questions about a certain items or products. Product knowledge is one thing that colleagues are lacking.

Last year when ism was being implemented they told back of house if you don't like it leave. Guess what!! in two weeks I left! The entire visual team followed me. Everyone from merchandising/signing left. Now they're upset because they lost all their hard workers. Truly what did they expect. We all found better paying jobs and companies that care about us. I found a better position and pay. We're not working like farm animals any more. Macys needs to realize that they need to treat their long term employees with respect. Macys has the most disrespectful/abusive managers in retail.

It's management. Across the board.

My manger changed mine, and a few others on my team schedules 3x this week WITHOUT telling us.
You can't change the schedule during the middle of the workweek and then be shocked when we don't know/or can't work what you gave us due to us making plans.

It's really sad how bad this company is doing.
The people still working at Macys are the ones too afraid to leave because they're too comfortable there. Not to mention the job either back of house or front of house is super easy. And as long as you don't steal anything it's hard to get fired.
But with all the cut hours they're hoping more and more people quit because that in turn saves em payroll and come quarterly earning they'll look amazing on paper so the d-mb investors will continue to be happy and keep throwing money at this soul sucking garbage pit of a company.

Cutting hours for employees and then extending hours for customers to shop for nonexistent merchandise and fussing about REQUIRING you to take your lunch/dinner break is ridiculous. Hopefully, the new CEO has a clue on how to run a successful retail establishment. Macy's used to be the go to store, it has been run into the ground under current leadership. Who in the world decided we do not need a junior department (3 MAJOR universities and 9 high schools in town. Plus, folks come from another state to shop at Macy's?)
All I can do is shake my head.

Why would anyone work at Macy's for $15 or $16 an hour when in most markets you can get a job making two or three dollars more an hour. If you work at Macy's, you know that there is seldom enough support to complete the exhaustive workload and never enough hours to meet the service expectations that customers expect in a department store.

No, I'll take working at a small box retailer in the mall or a fast food place where you aren't expected to do the work of what used to be three or four people. The complexity of working in a store is now at a point where employees who are capable of meeting expectations are also capable of getting a better job and making significantly more than we pay. It's not that no one wants to work, it's that nobody who is qualified to successfully run a register, explain credit, explain bronze, take markdowns, complete signing, complete fulfillment orders, complete BOPS orders, clean, place merchandise while following three different types of merchandising guides, learn and use antiquated register systems, become product experts for the whole store since we are all required to work everywhere, do pre-sale, help pull reverse logistics (thanks ISM), and don't forget be able to explain the charity donation to every customer.

It’s one of the most undesirable, low paying jobs in the job market, people take that job when they have no other options.

Unnecessary extended hours, not many opportunities for advancement, old technology, old style customer service called “my client” is required to be used in some areas to generate sales, and the favoritism for scheduling.

Many many reasons, after a while it becomes intolerable. The schedule always changing and lack of support, demanding customers. Hopefully the next CEO will start addressing these issues. Coming from Bloomingdale’s which normally look like nice organized stores.
