My group has a senior director retiring in the coming months. Wondering if this will keep the junior engineers under him/her safe from being laid off.

No because there is another 5h!thead eyeing the senior director position.
Definitely helps, as the Sr Directors are usually the ones usually blaming the Jr Engineers for their own sh!t decisions gone bad.
Please remember the recent layoffs in Q are cost driven, the goal has been talked over and over again to cut 5% operation expenses. A senior director’s total compensation and expenses may be 10x - 15x a regular engineer. His retirement may give your group budget a chunk of flexibility.
