Here's the thing with Giant Eagle. If you were getting something extra for the money you pay, it would be worth it. But from what I see, the food they sell is just like the food at every other store. There's nothing about it that has a premium taste to justify the premium price. Their stores are fairly nice, though, but at the end of the day, you've got to be at least within competition's price range. You don't have to be the lowest, but you can't be too high either unless you are giving people something to justify the higher price.
Keep us posted when the fat gets trimmed. Going to need a machete for that. Corporate fat has been out of control there for years. Literally 50+ VP’s and over 100 Directors. Millions upon millions of dollars paid to people that do nothing. I get the feeling BA agrees. Go get ‘em Billy! We’re rooting for you!
There will be quite a few VP's and others leaving the company at the end of April. Also expect to see some ELT members gone at the end of fiscal. Billy isn't messing around. Corporate fat getting trimmed.
hopefully things will get better for you,but from those we,ve spoken to ,who are still there , say it’s only gotten worse because departments leads are afraid. And the changes are negatively impacting morale, even pharmacy.there’s no sense of confidentiality when seeking internal help so union may be a viable option for some. be cautious who you talk to and what you say
sounds like maybe an opportunity to bring in unions for some of you…including front end, back end, warehousing, and pharmacy. stand up for yourselves.
must just be a coincidence that some of these sudden unfavorable department ‘changes’ occur AFTER the employee surveys are over or closed
and so it’s that time now for department leads to scramble and make “changes” to show the new leadership how important they are and how budgets can be cut… at the expense of what team member happiness there is we have left, of course. trim, trim, trim!
Weinstein is on the board. How can he leave the company?
How else do you think he got 7 promotions to svp/chief in 5 years?
Laughing at a previous post that has since been deleted. It called the failing myPerks program and it’s “inventor” a joke… and look who just got promoted this morning.
The problem is Laura has always ran the company as if she was a princess with a blank check. Don't believe me? Ask Jason Lapina who tried to hold her spending in check and was shown the door. Area VP's know they can "go straight to laura" to get around the budget.
Corporate areas are never held accountable for the hires in their area and they get bloated and force layoffs because id--ts in corporate don't know how to staff and maintain a budget.
It's not a bad place to work in all honesty. They just have no idea how to stop overspending on stupid sh-t. We're a regional supermarket...but that's never been good enough for some reason. Too many VP's, too many people collecting checks who do nothing.
I hate to pile on after an unfortunate event such as a firing, but here’s the thing… I personally watched a lot really good people get walked out to their car during one of the many mass layoff events. Not because they were incapable of performing their job…more so because the decisions Laura and her executive staff made that put the company “behind budget”. Unlike Laura and all the “related’s”, these people didn’t have a million dollar savings account to fall back on. But nonetheless it’s nice to see the people that made these awful decisions get shown the door for once.
And intern to VP in 6 years? Wow, now that is nepotism at its finest folks!
Wonder if she would like to start a support group “Ex-GE employees” which consists of so many of our Pittsburgh community members whose lives were turned upside down due to changes made at Giant Eagle. Check out her post on YouTube about how excited she was to open a Giant Eagle office in India. It’s priceless.
Giant Eagle is a good company with many folks who do good work. There are often multiple generational employees. I think Laura is a good person who has made some not so good decisions and was contradictory at times. If you are family, you get promoted every year without showing any real value. She speaks to buying and supporting "local" but bought a failing marketing firm in San Diego with pompous, egotistical, overpaid individuals who know nothing about the Western PA or Ohio customers and don't even shop in grocery stores. The company invested in technology like the app to eliminate paper and give more Perks not accounting for the fact that PA ranks FIVE of all 50 states for the most senior population. They also created Scan, Pay and Go which only yielded to more people stealing. I understand the need to evolve technology, it can't be at the detriment of your primary audience. She also invested in a "Tech Annex" in Lawrenceville with no parking that no employees wanted to go to. She farmed out most of IT to Bangalore hoping for higher, cheaper production. Stores are short staffed because you forced people to get vaccinated and wear masks or join unions. No student or college kids want to pay union dues. And let's not even get started on GetGo - a blank check for a new POS and flashy cooler doors. They forgot they were a grocery store - and not an IT company. They forgot what who made the company unique - it's was the local talent who knew the market better than anyone. They forget that people just want good quality food at good prices.
Can someone on the inside keep us posted on when all the various family members start to bail? The son, nephews, nieces, cousins, etc. GE has a TON of related employees all throughout the family…often in nonsense fluffy roles. I’d imagine a lot of these folks are quickly realizing that their gravy train is coming to a stop. Most of them wouldn’t be qualified to be an assistant night crew manager at a gas station.
Hopefully the leadership by arrogance & intimidation will change in some departments.
Daddy’s daughter has ruined many former employees lives. I hope she got escorted out of the building like others have been.. GOOD RIDDANCE!
It is absolutely DISGUSTING to hear people complain that a female was removed and replaced with a "white man". First of all, you're s-xist, racist, and morally repugnant. If you are an employee of any company you should want that company to succeed and to succeed you need to put the right people in roles to lead the company forward. There should be no consideration given in the hiring process to gender, race, religion, s-xuality, etc. By continuing to rail against these flawed logics you're becoming exactly what you try to criticize others for. A bigot.

And the usual sycophants in there "liking" and supporting her driving the company into the ground...but they are in her inner circle.
She just posted an update on LinkedIn...the old classic, "going to spend more time with my family" excuse.
The usual response of those who were forced out and actually doesn't have to worry about how she will support herself or where her next meal will come from...very different from one of her employees getting the ax. Totally transparent nonsense
There's a lot more family than her husband. Lot's and lot's of kids, grandkids and spouses from the original owners sucking at the te-t. I'm sure some of the more distant family are sore afraid that their meal ticket is gone.
Does one Karet’s firing also have a domino effect on ECHO…developer that does a lot of giant Eagle and GetGo deals….her husband is CEO of Echo.
Time will tell
Ahold Delhaize makes the most sense they started to enter the pittsburgh metro area with Martin's and even put a store in DuBois PA kinda closer to Erie PA and pretty far from the rest of their store base and had tried to convert some Tops stores in New York to Martin's and had to revert those locations back to Tops and after the announcement that the Giant/Martin's division was closing the northeast ohio Tops stores and selling some of them to Giant Eagle they then sold the rest of the Tops stores off and stopped the expansion in to the Giant Eagle territories and the Martin's banner was only used in the Giant Eagle territories and areas where another Giant chain that Ahold Delhaize also owns and they too had been in negotiations for Albertsons with no territory conflicts unlike Kroger and Kroger is going to be doing online grocery delivery in Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania areas and are already or will be building that fulfillment center in the Cleveland area in Oakwood Village Ohio
Kroger isn’t going to buy. They are in a web of a mess with the albertson purchase. They have their hands full. She needed to go. It was overdue. Board knew it. Heard it almost happened a few years ago. This is a great move. Just time for fresh ideas and new person is a great choice.
Meh. Giant Eagle. Krogers. Who cares. I stopped shopping at GE 15 years ago. Better value at Wal Mart, shop N save and now Aldi’s. Love Aldi’s!
And while we are at it….no comparison between the GetGo and Sheetz! Sheetz blows them away. Better food. Better service. It’s also the eyeball test. You never see a lot of vehicles at a GetGo. Sheetz is always busy. Time to punt, giant eagle.
So, the company will be announced as "sold" in the next 6 months or less, which is why BA is just interim. This was a move for her to save face, don't be fooled. This way when the company is sold to Kroger, she can say, "i never sold my family company, i was ousted and the non-family members sold it".
This all lines up with the CIO FROM KROGER who came in and told everyone he was here for 4 years to help them tranform. They have transformed to do everything just like Kroger. Now laurs is "gone" and Mr. Cio can spend his final year of his 4 year plan helping migrate Giant Eagle to Kroger.
It was a good run for the Shapira's, dad did great, princess was a marketer trying to run a company and failed. Time for the next chapter. Welcome back to PA Kroger.
Congratulations to all current Giant Eagle team members!!! I’m not sure if the company can be saved…she did a lot of serious damage over the past 20 years…but you have to start somewhere. Now that her enormous ego is out the door, a legit Kroger buyout may actually occur. It is time to rebuild and heal. Good luck everyone!
She almost ran it into the ground. Not sure the next will be any better.
It’s a failing company with awful management. Delete! DELETE! DELETE!

Normally when people aren't good at their jobs they're replaced by someone who will be good at it. Let's not overthink this. It was wayyyy overdue. Good riddance.
She was pushed out. This has nothing to do with health.
I wonder if she is having health issues. This is very unusual.
CEO is being replaced? B.A. is taking over all operations I hear. Wonder whats going on?
Why is she leaving?
