DOJ Sues UnitedHealth for $1B Thanks to Whistleblower

For the second time in one month, the U.S. Justice Department has sued UnitedHealth Group for wrongfully obtaining over $1 billion from Medicare

Thanks to the whistleblower and other industry insiders filing suit under the False Claims Act, the truth about how deep corruption runs within private insurance companies has come out and the government has a chance of recovering the billions in taxpayer dollars stolen by them.

A former finance director at UnitedHealth Group reported the fraud. In this role, he explained in an interview with The New York Times, he monitored projects that were designed to cheat the system, making patients look sicker than they were so that the insurer could charge Medicare Advantage more to cover them.

UnitedHealth has stated it will contest the whistleblower’s allegations. Evidence suggests, however, that UnitedHealth has a long history of being involved in the kind of fraud that has plagued the healthcare industry for decades.

What does it have to do with layoffs. Well unless the company has a budget for " if we get caught", usually layoff follow. Why? Because they don't have a budget and employees are the easiest way to balance that loss. Hence lay off. The company has to recoup all that money in fines, repaying medicare etc.

@7ozx+1lGnyqKP- 100%+ accurate observation. its a vicious cycle- M&A/" time to market" at the cost of regulation violation. When "caught" time to lay off employees and/or move workforce to lower cost (outside of America) to pay for lawyers/fines etc. The cycle repeats itself....The "cri@m" is committed by both the "offender" and those "collected" the fines to allow this pattern to continue.

What's interesting is even if you have tons of documentation to support your claim, the company hires topnotch very expensive law firms to basically use the law itself to get out of this situation, by trying to discredit the whistleblower. Such language as he failed to state a claim, hundreds of examples, so the company could be guilty as sin and can still manage to extricate themselves. Ain't cheap. Who pays for this kind of expense. The employees.

Justice department at first refused to intervene. But now they have, that means they take over the case. This just happened in 2022. So it will go to court unless UHC decides to settle and pay . And of course agree to an integrity contract.

This lawsuit is ongoing. The quitam is current. Yea parts were thrown out but it was amended. The whole thing is on line and it has not been closed. It is regarding project 7.

Most of this lawsuit was abandoned. I don’t know why people keep putting outdated information. Yes, this company makes stupid decisions and screws over its Employees but it doesn’t make you any better by not providing completely accurate and up to date info. Sometimes working in a toxic environment makes you the same way. Reflect on that.
