Thread regarding Boeing Co. layoffs

For three months know I have been asking my Lunatic Boeing manager if she can give me a voluntary layoff?

Her reply has always been "At this time there is no business case to give you or anyone else at Boeing a voluntary layoff."

Well today little Ms. Lunatic came by asking if I was serious in asking for voluntary layoff? Without delay I told her Yes. Her resonse was "That is all for now". Going to see how soon the lunatic pays me another visit if she plans to.

Note to my manager. Yes, Ms. Lunatic I really am ready to accept a voluntary layoff. So if you can get it approved I'll walk out the Boeing door for the last time.

Yep, involuntary layoff is the best way to do it. That's what I did and I was a manager.

What you want is an involuntary layoff...better benefits. You just need to get your totem rating reduced. That's what all smart early retirees did back when I did it. Of course we had caring, competent management back then who put good employees and company before their personal profit.

I suspect the reason you want a layoff is you do not want to reimburse the company for your tuition?

I’ve known other people in the same boat. My advice would be a stick it out until you don’t have to pay it back then give notice.

I’ve known lots of people who were extremely close to retirement age and were literally begging for a layoff, and they could not get it. It’s surprisingly hard to get a VLO from certain groups.

It's hard to imagine this person is earning their salary.

The fact you have a manager with a background studying French instead of actual aircraft manufacturing or engineering does not surprise me at all.

Boeing stopped promoting people to Manager based on competence and experience to promoting people based on their education such as an MBA, or based on politics so most of the managers can’t even do the job of the people they are managing much less actually train people.

And when you have so many new people with no experience, it becomes extremely dysfunctional. But Boeing only cares about paying people less so this is how they want to run their business.

It’s one of the main contributor to the toxic work environment at Boeing.

You need to have a relative who was once in a high position at Boeing to get into management at Boeing. Why anyone else would want to work at Boeing is beyond me.

There are so many bad Managers at Boeing and there seems to be little accountability. You would think with the number of layoffs that they would have gotten rid of most of the toxic managers.

When you work for a company with as high of turnover as Boeing, managers can blame layoffs, low pay, etc. for the high turnover. there’s no accountability at the management side for people leaving.

What’s even sadder is most managers at Boeing do not even have experience working in the department they manage. Most of them got their position because they got an MBA or because they meet a diversity quota.

The declaration of a VLO is a corporate decision, top down NOT bottom UP. They only offer a VLO once at the beginning of a RIF cycle. This is used as a tool to gauge how many fish they can catch if they were to cast their net and how many they'll need to issue ILO's to after the initial VLO. Boeing selects up front who demographically will be eligible for a VLO. Once you are chosen to apply for a VLO, if you fall into their target parameters, "they" will determine who will be accepted. In other words signing up for a VLO if you are offered one does not mean the company will or has to accept it. It totally up to the company.

YOU are under the false assumption that the "voluntary" in VLO means it's up to you whether you get laid off or not. It isn't !!! Wake Up !!! The only thing that is 100% under your discretion is resigning. So quit or suck it up. Your whinning is a discredit to the thousands of recently laid off employees whose lives have been dumped into the garbage bin and who were not fortunate enough to escape a boeing ILO !!!!

People waiting for a company, that they spent much of their time complaining about, to give them something to leave. Then complaining because they dont get it... Why Wait... Seems there is value from said company for staying. $$$ Then expecting to get paid to leave. In return seems like these individuals arent adding value to the company and passing the responsibility of that to the company. Your perception of anything in life is the responsibility of the individual. Change your perception or your atmosphere. It is not the responsibility of others or a business to do that for you.

I am rooting for you!! Hope you get a VLO. I and many others I know would gladly accept a VLO. By the way I also work for a lunatic Boeing manager. There sure are a lot of them at Boeing. To bad they are not required to know much about designing and building airplanes to be a manager.

OP- Just fyi it depends on what department you work in but I highly doubt you will get a VLO at this time. And if you do, the company needs to announce that VLOs will take place before Involuntary layoffs in order to receive unemployment benefits from accepting a VLO. Otherwise, you need to show that your termination from your job was not your fault in order to receive benefits and asking for a layoff normally does not count

I believe that a firing is in order here, not a layoff. Treating people with disrespect, especially your manager is immature, and asking to be laid off is insane. If you don't like your job that much, quit and find a new one.
