Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Bloat !

This has been a problem at Intel. Too much bloat.

Even after these layoffs, I can guarantee that you can point to at-least 2 people who work with you day to day, whom you would not miss. Not because you don't like them or they dont agree with you, because they bring no value. And a lot of times it is even difficult to see how they keep surviving (its not just politics).

These are the folks who you ask question and nothing comes back till you follow up 3 times. And even then it feels like they are doing you a favor.

These are the folks who sit in big meetings and never have anything meaningful to contribute

These are the folks who speak up in meetings but they just derail with either a super vague question that cannot be answered in the meeting and nor is the scope of that meeting

These are the folks who always find reasons to believe something cannot be done vs spending time, creating something and showing whats possible.

Having said that. I must say that I also work with some very good folks. Who are passionate. Put in a hard day of work. Are great team players. Whether they agree or not, always find a way to move the conversation forward. And most importantly create value.

Too many people in my team have no projects at all. I'm lucky to still have one key project, all the lazy bones are trying to have something tied to mine without spending time. Last week, I told 2nd level manager in group meeting that I'm the only one working on this.

These people are the competition your manager bring in to keep you on your toes. Doing so frees him from the need to manage you. It grows his team, and adds to his power. That's the Intel way.

The worst consequence is that layers of managers lose touch with their domain knowledge. You set your goal and the manager keeps you on your own schedule. That's all. Any wh--e can do that.

Let’s look at the huge inefficiencies here!

Intel 131k employees and 63B revenue

AMD 15K employees and 23B revenue

Nvidia 22k employees 26B revenue

TSMC 65k employees 75B revenue

Add up TSMC, Nvidia and AMD and you get to ~ 100k employees ans 124B revenue.

Talk about mismanagement and bloat at Intel!
