Thread regarding Micron Technology Inc. layoffs

Listen up everyone!

I worked at Micron for 18 years. I survived many downturns and have watched the company change over time and as the leadership changed. When I started, Micron was a family. I knew most of my co-workers personally and would hang out a lot outside of the office. The leadership wanted Micron to be successful so that all of its employees would be prosperous and happy. "Teambuilding" was something we all did voluntarily.

Now, it is a corporate monster! They don't give a F-CK about you or your family. You are just a number to them. Your co-workers are not your friends and will throw you under the bus if it means they can keep their job or even get a better rating. That is the culture they have intentionally created after implementing the bell-curve rating system.
I quit last year and before I left I warned everyone that would listen that this was coming. I wanted a layoff package but knew I would get much more if I quit early and got out of Boise before the bottom fell out on the housing market. I have no regrets.
To Sanjay and his cronies, YOU RUINED THE ONCE WONDERFUL PLACE I USED TO CALL MY SECOND HOME. You claim that PEOPLE are one of your core values, what a joke. I hope you fall head first out of your ivory tower. Micron made ample cash reserves from the pandemic to survive this downturn without layoffs. You don't care about the people who pour their blood, sweat and tears into their job. It's all about the share price for you as that is how you get paid. Why don't you make a REAL sacrifice and donate 20% of all of your Micron stock back to the company? That alone would pay for ALL the layoffs at the Boise site. GO F-CK YOURSELF SANJAY!
To all you regular people out there, get your affairs in order and shore up your finances. It's going to get a lot worse. Prepare for the next round of layoffs as it will impact you no matter what. Even if they don't let you go, you will be expected to do more work for less pay. I've seen Micron cut the pay for ALL engineers by 10% before, and they will do it again. There are WAY better companies out there. I haven't been happier since I quit. You should enjoy your work as it is where you spend half (or more) of your waking life and if you enjoy your work life, your home life benefits as well. Don't think Micron is the only option, it's actually one of the worst options available.

Good luck everyone, my heart goes out to you.

As a person who worked at in Micron many years, I completely agree with the original post. In the past, the people who ran Micron were established here in Boise, their children went to school here with your children and they were part of the community every day, not just to make a PR event with the governor. Even if they didnt know your name, they recognized your face at the grocery store and would nod in acknowledgment. It seems like it made a difference in their approach to HR. If you have been at Micron a while and are getting older it may serve you well to take your future in your own hands and make a move if you get the chance. Make no mistake about it, there is a bias against older workers when you are looking for a job. If you are over 50 and not ready to retire, my advice is to start looking for a company that is not he-l bent on churning the employee pool to keep them motivated. Best of luck to all of you.

If you are in Boise, I can understand how you feel. In the past Boise is center of power, it has changed for many years. For who are not in Boise, any round of layoff is the same, just a job for living.

This one is different. They are flexing about the record cash in the bank and then laying people off. I could live with it if they weren’t throwing money away left and right in all of the areas that do not matter. This place is becoming evil to work for and the workplace is getting more and more toxic. Run while you can if you can…

In response to top comment, Sanjay wealth estimates wrong.
2022 - total compensation >$28.8M

Check out exec pay.org and realize he has a net worth just at micron the past 5 years north of $100M not including income and assets from his life previously with Sandisk. He’s probably net worth in the $300-350M range when you look back over all his years.

When you spend $10M on a house for example, that cash leaves your pocket or your investment portfolio, but still remains as part of your net worth in the form of equity in that home which may be worth $20M ten years later, so the net worth estimate above may be well short of his actual net worth.

I too agree with the writer of the original post but to comment on some of the replies, Sanjay makes over 15 million A YEAR and his net worth is north of 70 million. As for Steve Appleton, I worked there in 2009, and it was a very hard time. Micron had SEVERAL losing quarters before the first layoff was announced and as he said in his email it was the hardest thing he ever had to do. He was genuinely stressed about how his decisions would affect the employees and did what he could to keep as many people on as possible. I would agree that some of the decisions he made were not the best business decisions, but that wasn't really his goal. He used government money to start the solar and LED business and even though they didn't work out, it kept many people employed for several more years. SANJAY, on the other hand, thought he would have a losing quarter when the pandemic started and cut all pay raises and bonuses and started planning for layoffs. Oh, wait, instead we had RECORD profits. Did he back pay everyone who got a promotion without a raise or give them the bonuses they earned? NOPE, HE WAITED ANOTHER SIX MONTHS BEFORE REINSTATING PAY RAISES. Micron just got BILLIONS from the government when they passed the CHIPS act. Guess what everybody, first losing quarter, pack your sh-t and get out! Profits over people.
Was Steve better than Sanjay? Absolutely!

I can't believe you lived through 2009 and think Steve Appleton is any good

You are so correct. Sanjay is EVIL! I hope he gets the utmost karma coming his way. His net worth is 20 million. He is NO Steve Appleton. It is such a shame what he has done to so many hard working people and to the company that used to feel like family.

I second the writer. I left Micron some time ago, best decision ever. Initially I liked the work culture, but pandemic period was a transition. The management sounded like dictators, basically treating employees depending on the market conditions. The happy faces I once saw during lunch hours were gone, everyone would now be eating while working. It’s depressing inside the campus, black and white painted interiors, people walking with sad long faces. There are better places to work.

You must be a fun person to party with, you act like layoffs never happened under previous leadership when in fact it always happened every 2-3 years.

No doubt it sucks when it happens and we all feel the pain, but don't throw leadership in front of the bus when their primary goal is to protect the business. Micron will bounce back stronger, just like it has the other 10 times this has happened.
