Thread regarding Salesforce.com Inc. layoffs

I feel stupid for investing so much effort

Investing so much effort was a huge mistake, I see that now, and the lesson for those who are not affected is that the performance really doesn't mean much when it comes to layoffs.

Your first mistake is thinking that you were smarter than your cynical elders with more experience. Don't tell me they didn't warn you.

Your second mistake is thinking that effort or interest or skill equals your market or political value.

So glad I asked the salesforce recruiter “tell
me why I should join Salesfarce?”
She didn’t answer but instead put me on a blacklist. Thank god for her speedy stupidity
So glad I stayed with my current employer
Lesson for me was: don’t leave because of 1 bad manager. Change managers. Not the company

Well, you need to think about it a different way: you invested a lot of effort to get a sense of fulfilment and better yourself too. Forget about the company.

I agree it's a shame that "work hard = promotion = higher salary = more at risk during layoffs", particularly here where apparently many managers were not involved and therefore people were selected from spreadsheets.

Work smart not hard. Good/bad luck is part of the game.

Effort is fine as long as it is directed and targeted at the internal politics and relationships to self promote and your compensation. Effort elsewhere is a wasted effort. No one is there to take care of you when the bottom falls out.

If you are in US, you are automatically in more danger, cuz it's a "mature" market. So a high performing staff in US is in danger compared to an average performing staff elsewhere, dont be shocked.

US is overstaffed end of story, performance wont save you, cuz no matter how good you are, you did well because of SF brand, try to go out there and sell your own CRM see how that goes, we are all highly replaceable

The harder you work, the higher you go, the more you get paid, then you become a bigger target when it comes to layoffs.

MB complained about productivity but it seems like most of the people I know who were laid off were some of the best workers, and probably some of the higher paid ones within their orgs.

Do the minimum to get your job done. If you're going to upskill, make sure it's in something transferable to another role. Look out for yourself and for your actual family, and not SF and their "Ohana".

Agreed! I feel so ashamed as some of the most hardworking people around us got laid off. Salesforce definitely did bad to those people. I too no longer wanna work here. If this is the way they reward their efficient people, what is my motivation then? Sad times we live in. I am sorry it had happened to you but it seems like this company really didn’t deserve you and all your hard work. Hopefully soon you will land a much better opportunity.
