The company has basically doubled its workforce over the pandemic and some might say that 18k are actually not big cuts considering the total number of employees.
However, I still think that these cuts are too deep.

This is nothing. The next phase will be even larger and more brutal. Word is that if you aren’t shown the door now, you will later this year. It’s going to be mad.
Sadly, AWS has finally reached the timeline of many tech companies, and the financial commentators see more spending cuts and consequential layoffs owing to over build-out of infrastructure and employees. It happens to all once-great companies (and I truly believe AWS was a great company), and so the frequent cycle of LRs commences now. Hold tight - some layoffs will make no sense, just like at other tech cos. It's just business.
