Thread regarding Optum layoffs

ENGINEERS, LET US UNIONIZE!

AI/ML Engineers, Technical Managers, Architects, Reliability Engineers, Operations Engineers, Quality Engineers, Software Engineers, Data Engineers, Dev Ops, IT, Etc

Tired of wearing more and more hats instead of the company hiring more resources and constant threat of layoffs? We can no longer voice our opinions. Survey, feedbacks, Townhalls are all BS

End white collar slavery and improve quality of life.

@hz Interesting take. I see your point. However, unionizing will stop some of this sh**

I get why people are frustrated, I’m at Optum too and feeling the same pressure. More work, fewer people, constant talk about layoffs. But after reading this thread, I don’t think unionizing is the answer. The reality is the decisions driving all this, offshoring, vendor consolidation, automation, aren’t something a union is going to stop. If anything, it could speed it up. Leadership will just move more work to India or external partners to avoid the added cost and rigidity.

We’re in tech and healthcare, this space changes fast. Adding a union layer doesn’t protect us, it makes us less adaptable. Honestly, the better move is staying marketable and mobile, not locked into something that could make us easier to replace.

Ej, you truly are a useful id--t.

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) has a long-standing history of left-wing activism and deeply aligns with democratic socialist politics. The union frequently collaborates with socialist organizations, figures, and labor movements.
Bernie Sanders Endorsements: (mr 3 homes himself and never had a real job outside gov't and multimillionaire) The CWA was one of the largest national labor unions to back self-described democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders. CWA was a major contributor to his presidential campaigns and heavily backed his progressive platform.

The NewsGuild: CWA represents workers at Jacobin, a leading print and online magazine that offers socialist perspectives on politics and culture.

DSA Staff members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)—the largest socialist organization in the U.S.—are unionized under the Washington-Baltimore local of The NewsGuild-CWA.

Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA): Prominent AFA-CWA leaders, such as Sara Nelson, have openly aligned themselves with democratic socialist principles and frequently speak at socialist events.

Go talk to some people that actually fled socialist countries and find out just how wonderful it is. It was so wonderful they left! But it'll be different this time right?

@ep There’s always one like you that brings nonsense into threads. LETS STICK TO THE SUBJECT! Take power away from these corporations! We don’t care who does it. JUST DO IT!!!! @OP we are with you. Let’s unionize and take back our power. @ep can go wherever corporations end up. Hopefully in the 🗑️

Also we don’t care what the titles are, so we don’t need to argue about engineers, technicians blah blah, we can figure that out later!
KEEP TRUMP AND POLITICAL PARTIES OUT OF HERE. Stick to the main subject. Thank you!

Hopefully Trump busts all the unions once he is done fixing all the other garbage he inherited from #45.

You want to unionize just a certain class of workers — pointless! They plan for robots to replace engineers too. Wake up! You guys think you’re so smart while you trained your own replacements. FOH.

The entire 99% of the human population should “unionize.” ALL workers need to go on coordinated strikes globally and watch the system they control collapse. Make their assets useless just like they aim for ours. Wipe out their investments stocks and portfolios just like they will soon wipe out ours, to trap us and our children in perpetual slavery.

The correct term to use is comrade. As in comrade engineer. The DSA will thank you for your contributions.

@ch think maybe they won't be allowed to use the word engineer or architect.

I mean it's ridiculous now.

Candy Engineer ?
Toilet Paper Architect ?

Nah I think they should be banned from destroying those professions by using the terms with literally every job.

Its true

@cx I've just seen some bizarre ideas from software architects here is all. Things like telling a team they have to use X language because that's "the best language to build it in" i.e. Python for a project that just needs to call AI endpoints or making asinine suggestions about a feature an application should have despite it already being tested with users who HATED it.

Maybe the real software architects are all allocated to teams far and away from me. It is a big company.

@cj You must be in a really bad group lol. I’ve worked with many decent ones. Also Solution Architecture is another one. You’ll find them in Product Teams. Companies also do people injustice by giving them titles they don’t qualify for. As a Business Systems Analyst I’ve seen many people called business analysts who can’t get that title when they leave. They know nothing about what business analysis is.

Not that we have any real software architects though. All the ones I've met seem to have zero experience with software.

This whole "ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ARCHITECTS OR SOFTWARE ARCHITECTS" line of conversation is entirely meaningless.

Is it protected? Yeah. Are any software architects referring to themselves as simply an "Architect" in professional spaces? No. So why are we even having this conversation? Did you guys recently learn a fact you wanted to share? The terms "software engineer" and "software architects" are not protected and there's no indication they will be.

@c3

The word engineer and architect will be protected across the board to professionally certified ones only.

Push from actual P.Engs and P.Architects.

Can you call yourself a nurse or doctor legally? No. It's exactly the same thing and I 100% agree. Stealing these words to sound good is fraudulent. And needs the same penalties under the law.

You are not real engineers. Or architects. Stop using these terms. Its insulting to real ones and devalues their professions.

Find other words.

@ah So all of you posting this will then accuse people of discriminating against Indians. We want Americans to get the bulk of American jobs, and outsourcing and H1B to be used sparingly and evenly, not just to one group of people. Imagine if the roles were reversed. You’d be hollering. Some of these H1B hires even get into leadership roles at UHG, which should be a no no! Then look down on other employees of color thinking they are superior. Some are even chauvinistic and don’t hide it. While generalizing is not ok, we should also call these things out! All leaders of job in the US should be US Citizens. You shouldn’t have people that aren’t given power over those that are!

@av While you are right, the OP should have changed this to IT Architects and Software Engineers. While this absolutely is a thing, it’s quite different from Electronic Engineers, Civil Engineers, Building Architects. You are right. The difference should be called out.

@a1 Exactly right! UHG is a cesspool of psychopaths, bullies and horrible people. Those are the people they place in leadership roles, retain and defend. Their legal team are like this. HR a close second 😆

@ah That’s the point. We are tired of people like you and companies like these! Hence the post. It’s time to turn things around. You can go and work from there. You can’t outsource 50% of American jobs then employ “AI”. What will these companies do when no one can purchase or use their products cause everyone is unemployed? Beyond ridiculous!

Wait you are Professional Engineers? P.Engs?

Actual architects?

Or are those protected titles. More laws are coming about using those titles if you are not credentialled.

Each of these jobs listed by the OP are perfect candidates to move to India.

There is a time and place for unions, but I can't see this at Optum. It would just accelerate offshoring to India and the Philippines. A unionized workforce would be a RIFed workforce for American workers.

@OP they have set up a rat race so the weaker/nicer ones get exterminated one by one and the meanest, vilest, ruthless or cheaters survive. It's by design.
