Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

The only safety is always having options

I used to think that once I got a job at EM, I could stop looking and just settle in. I don't think that anymore. I've seen too many people blindsided by layoffs or PIPs, people who thought they were safe. Now I keep my resume updated and I browse listings even when I'm not actively searching. You never know when you'll need to move fast, and having a head start makes all the difference.

@a2 I wouldn’t mind at all if I was let go for looking for other options. It’s completely against my nature to just slack off in order to be selected for PIL. I’ve debated gone back and forth on whether I want to let my manager know they should just rank me in the bottom because I want to leave. I’d love that 3 month PIL.

One day, email access ends. Your name disappears from org charts. No one or someone else sits at your desk. You may think it will never happen to "ME" but who knows.

In our section, we have people openly brag about “finding the mole” and putting effort into removing them. Somehow this has become a strategy for promotion. It’s not about showing up, doing great work, or delivering results. Instead, someone decides to go above and beyond in kissing up to the right people, and just like that, your career at ExxonMobil is over.
