Thread regarding EchoStar Communications Corp. layoffs

May 21 Town Hall Recording Was Edited?

Did anyone else notice this? The session went on for about an hour. The recording is 40 minutes long.

Noticeably missing: some of Hamid's comments about corporate taxes and how to best handle the $40 billion windfall from spectrum sales, Hamid's comments about how the "rich guys" benefit from certain tax practices, and most notably, that kind of joke question about whether we'd see any part of that sale in our 401Ks (and Hamid's response that he'd have to see it in his 401K first).

Did anyone else notice this, or am I going crazy? Did they actively edit out the more tone-deaf and uncomfortable parts of that session?

yes, youre correct. Most of the section talking about proceeds from spectrum sale has been cut out.
rightly so, as transferring the gains to 401k accounts wouldn't offset the taxes.
crazier parts to me are:

  1. Spectrum sales would fund Echostar capital (VC or Hedge fund): Internally would still have to fight aggressively for the funds for internal development.
  2. He went on to discuss about AI, when there is no clear strategy in mind. Best way to use AI is with tokens (imo) but if we have to fight for cash for R&D, why would they provide tokens. i dont even have copilot pro after requesting access for it many months ago.
  3. He talked about SpaceX so many times. We get it, its a good company but he shouldve also mentioned some positive points of Echostar with it.
  4. Boost was only mentioned one time i believe, seems like a lost cause after so much marketing last year.
  5. At one point, he compared price of stock for SATS with Nvidia? Nvidia created an amazing product with high margin and SATS sold assets to not file for bankruptcy. why compare them?

im just venting.

seems like they dont have much hope in existing business but are looking more outwards for growth engines, its not entirely bad for the company as whole but its like a harbinger of turbulence in future for existing business' employees (hughes, boost etc.)
