Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

Let’s Be Honest

The more I read these threads, the more I see the same people saying the same things. It’s a bit sad really.

Former employees. Retirees. People who left years ago but still seem oddly invested in every headline and every rumour. I know a few of them personally - nice people but it’s a bit tragic how their identity is tied to a company. They read something in the papers and appear here as though they’re still sitting in the office. They would spend their kids wedding taking about what bp is doing wrong - true story. I find it quite sad, if I’m honest. At some point, you have to move on. Bp owes you nothing. You signed the contract. They followed it.

On bullying, there is truth in it. The post naming initials was accurate. Some of those behaviours were disgraceful and remain a stain on bp’s history. During the ‘good’ years, too many people got away with things because they delivered results. BL a casing point. There are others who could be added to that list. The difference now is that those behaviours are no longer ignored.

What I struggle with is the constant bitterness. A lot of the loudest criticism comes from people carrying old grudges, people who never got the promotion they wanted, or people who have convinced themselves that bp was the source of every setback in their career. That’s an easy story to tell yourself. It just isn’t always true. Let’s leave the future to the generation trying to turn this around.

One of the best things bp has done recently is show some backbone. Poor behaviour is being called out. People are being held accountable. BL and AM are examples. One person who should not be allowed to quietly disappear into the background is (*D) AC. A complete failure of leadership, judgement and self-awareness. Time to go.

The portfolio review is the right decision. Not everyone will agree with it. That’s fine. Leadership is not about making decisions that please everyone. When the details are announced, the reasoning will be clear enough.

And on Meg, I couldn’t disagree more with some of the comments made here. I’ve worked with a number of CEOs, inside and outside bp. She is one of the most impressive. The direction is right. The priorities are right. And she has dealt with a series of challenges that were not of her making with real composure and resilience.

I’ll leave it with this:

“It is not the critic who counts…”

It’s always easier to sit in the stands and tell everyone else what they should have done. Much harder to be the one making the decisions when the outcome actually matters. That’s the difference.

The bullying complaint is of course a cop out. The whiner will always feel bullied because he/she/it are ALWAYS ignored and often not treated graciously. They are miserable to be around and simply want to continue their free ride.

The high performer NEVER feels bullied because he is simply doing a spectacular job pulling the wagon. And who (other than the whiner) doesn't like and appreciate this individual?

As for the current organisational and people changes, yes we are trimming some of the surplus trees from the forest. But to restore the forest to full health and vitality, we will need to clear out much of the choking underbrush. And this means most of the current employees who find time to verbally vomit on this site.

@nz Employees are not even getting inflation-adjusted salary increases. Pensioners can get in line behind us.

The issue with the pension is they are quite rightly asking for inflation adjusted increases... which is being blocked and they are not being listen too.. so having been marginalised and ignored they quite rationaly use the channels the company preferes to disrupt..

@jz True but, we are now in a complex environment. The days of spanning time and being comfortable are almost over. Granted, lots of talented and hard working professionals but..,,,management has underperformed. 2 Cob in less than 10 months? What other surprises are in store?

let's be honest...the constant bitterness is because bp has lots of smart and hardworking people but the company has done nothing but sc--w up for the past twenty years. accidents, crises, scandals, reorgs.

much bitterness is from good employees who are angry about bp sc--wing up year after year after year. the company has been a disaster for 20 years.

the criticism often comes from employees who are sick and tired of bP sc--wing up year after year after year. bP has many smart, hardworking people who do good work but then bP effs up and destroys value

@OP ha ha, from the head of investor relations at BP. Many employees on here calling out what they see every day.

BP bullies new employees into submission and if you buck too much you are out.

The “you have 2 years of tissue rejection to get through” when you are a new employee is an understatement.

We won the battle of toxic kindness and lost the war of turning this company around.

Finally this site is getting good! Thanks Matt for pointing out all the Ex employees that post. A lot of us do hold a grudge, mainly because we were exited under duress by processes designed to ensure BL, KD etcs flawed vision of the company could be enacted. Now understand how we feel when we look back. Who was in the wrong??? Not us. It was bp and until such time as the company is finally gutted and chopped up for selling. This hilarious soap opera will continue.

No employees have sympathy for pensioners. You’re getting what you agreed to. Stop complaining, and let us employees get properly compensated for the work we are CURRENTLY doing.

Half+ of someones waking hours are spent at work - time you don’t get back. If the time was not a good investment, then you can become bitter about wasting it.

“One person who should not be allowed to quietly disappear into the background is (*D) AC. A complete failure of leadership, judgement and self-awareness. Time to go.” … “It is not the critic who counts…” 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🤦‍♀️

To all pensioners. Thank you for your service and your timing was perfect. The oil industry market today is so much different than even 10 years ago. The perpetual chronic unease that permeates every team particularly in the office. Field locations particularly rotational assignments still maintain a good working atmosphere.
The introduction of DEI and Woke ideology have hamstrung and terminated many a career. Fear and caution abound for the minister of culture and people…

lol.

Hello, I’m a UK bp pensioner.

I was paid well throughout my career. I retired with a pension many people today can only dream of. I accepted the terms, took the deal and have spent years benefiting from it.

Naturally, none of that matters.

Instead, I spend my mornings reading headlines about a company I left years ago before rushing to LinkedIn to explain why I am the real victim in all of this.

I helped build the business, you see. Which means I am entitled to endless gratitude, permanent outrage and, ideally, a larger pension. I need more than wage inflation. More. Higher. Get approval. Declined? Don’t you know who I am? I’m a has been. I used to be someone. Give me more right now or I’ll go shameless on LinkedIn 😂 I’ll call it a campaign so I feel important. I’ll send the bp pensions WhatsApp group more messages than my family or friends.

Have I convinced myself that a deal I willingly accepted has somehow become a broken promise? Absolutely. I’m deluded.

Every bp post is now my personal complaints desk. This gives me a purpose in life.

New project? “What about pensions?”

New hire announcement? “What about pensions?”

Safety milestone? “Broken promises.”

Strong results? “If only the pension was as strong?”

bp cures cancer! “It’s great bp has cured cancer but what about curing the BROKEN PROMISES…”

I may have left the company years ago, but I refuse to let that get in the way of commenting on absolutely everything it does.

Some people play golf. Some travel. Some spend time with their grandchildren.

I turn up under every bp LinkedIn post to post the same comment for the 437th time.

It’s important to have hobbies folks.

@a2 A tome? Bungs? Wasting companies time? Terrible Spanish... You ok hun? All alright at home? Maybe lost some purpose in life? Retirement not all it’s cracked up to be? Try getting friends or reacquainting with family. If you were still at bp you could try EAP, but alias it’s alcohol and chat rooms for you. Sad.

This venue has value. Employees can safely discuss and question the company’s direction. Strangely, your bitterness is actually care for the company and its employees. bp is a storied institution but, it recently has adopted some very dangerous practices and ideology…this needs to be flushed out.
