Thread regarding IBM layoffs

How to Avoid Being Laid Off at IBM

To avoid being laid off at IBM, focus on becoming indispensable by acquiring AI, cloud computing, and hybrid cloud skills, as these are critical areas where the company is investing. Proactively align your skills with IBM’s strategic direction, particularly in Watsonx, AWS, or hybrid cloud roles. High performers in essential, non-routine, and customer-facing roles are generally prioritized for retention.

Key Strategies to Increase Job Security at IBM

• Upskill in AI and Cloud: Actively learn and get certified in AI, machine learning, and cloud architecture (e.g., AWS, IBM Cloud).
• Show High Value and Impact: Document and communicate your impact, aiming to be recognized as an "A player" who drives revenue or efficiency.
• Be Visible and Adaptable: Be willing to work in the office, as remote workers have historically faced higher layoff risks in the tech sector.
• Avoid Routine Roles: Roles focusing on repetitive tasks are most vulnerable to automation and AI replacement.
• Network Internally: Build strong relationships with leadership to ensure your contributions are recognized and that you are aligned with new, growing teams.

I did. While you're parading your Expertise in X, keep upskilling in Y and Z. So when X declines, you pull Y or Z out of your back pocket

The real secret in Albany, yaar, is simple only. You must become favorite of some senior peoples or one particular group. If management is liking you, then your life is easy there. Too much chamchagiri and politics is happening. Hard work and real achievement is not giving much benefit. Even if your project is failing badly or initiative is going nowhere, still no issue ji if you are in good books of the important peoples. Then everything is managed somehow. That is how many peoples are surviving and getting promotion here.

@ad You didn't get my point. You can be a "Level 5" expert in X one day, and then X is no longer the hype product but Y is… and in Y you're just as good as a new hire, because you're "Level 0" in Y. But you're more expensive. So why not replace you with someone cheaper?

I do a lot of these things, which sound like table stakes. At the end of the day, if there isn’t some letter band (or a number of them) who are not advocates for your growth (or realize you even exist), you will one day be on the chopping block.

What is sorely missing on here is to be innovative, a trait that has been missing in a lot of us IBMers. Innovation draws out ideas which can turn into work. Work that can keep you busy while you look for something else. So keep ideating. Keep working. Someone will notice one day.

“Just skill up in CAMSS and you’ll be fine!”

“Just learn Blockchain. It’s the future of IBM!”

“WatsonX is the future. Make sure you know how to use it!”

Yeah G.F.Y.

You need to stay ahead of the hype cycle: Confluent, Red Hat AI, CUGA… ;-)
