Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Ominous email, severance and AI role

  • General Motors employees who were laid off Monday described their job terminations to CNBC.
  • The layoffs affect about 500 to 600 employees, largely in information technology roles in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan, according to a person at GM familiar with the layoffs.
  • Artificial intelligence played a role in the decision, but it was not the only reason for the terminations, the person said.

Who ever wrote this is spot on.

You need to upskill yourself so we can use you in other areas.
Then prove yourself on your cap. 5 different sections, each with 25 separate hoops to jump through.
We are going to need you to create templates and AI agents so we can automate your work. Then we need you to train some new folks who replaced people we let go, not because of their age but just randomly. Those new folks aren't here to replace you. Don't be insecure.
Then we are going to need you to prove cost cuts. Lots of them. Use the attached template for your submissions because we are tracking them, along with your mouse clicks, engagement through slack and PS we read your IMs for efficiency and transparency. All hands on deck! See you in the fireside chat, where we expect you to engage and ask questions. But do know the wrong kind of question will put you in the 5% bucket. Before we get to all that, please listen to my 20 minute safety message and chat about my wife and kids, and my origin story.

My god am I glad I took the buyout in 2023. And I remember Paul Jacobson saying just before the buyout offers. "Dont worry, we will not be expecting "Do more with less". Lies

Things about Ford shouldn't be posted here, but I'm curious about the GPS and camera stuff.

Do Ford employees have to wear ankle monitors?

It's better to get out of automotive, Ford GPS tracks new grads and puts cameras in their homes due to trust issues. This place is pretty strange, especially when they cover it up when confronted. Oakland University and Oakland County PD should be investigated...

AI actually is a tool that helps a person get done a little faster, but it doesn't replace people, especially since people have to check its work.

All those companies are using AI as a scapegoat for layoffs, and to make investors think they're cutting edge by doing AI, but really they're having financial problems due to poor management and bad decisions (anybody remember the Meta verse?)

I'm sure GM is getting ready to do the same thing.
