Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

No guilt at all

I walked away three months ago because I was tired of working sixty-hour weeks. I left my team in a tough spot, but I honestly don’t feel bad about it. I feel great. They created the mess that I kept fixing over and over again, and eventually I got tired of carrying it all on my back. Part of me would still love to see how things are working out for them now that the mule is gone.

@bp yes, everything gets complete, but at the expense of the people around that pick up the extra work. May sound surprising to some, but I do care about the coworkers I like.

In all honesty I think a lot of us over estimate how important we are at our job. In the past few months I have had three critical people within our department left including budget and corp planning and things that we thought it's going to get messed up or not done due to their expertise or the time crunch ended up completed and the ship keeps on sailing. This is not to downplay the importance of the OP but at the end we are all just little ants on a big mound.

@aq Damn you're insufferable.
We are about to start corporate plan and I run that entire process for multiple teams. Yes, the business will move on without me, but whoever is picking up my work from the planning team will have a lot on their plate during this time period. I like my team and would feel bad about that additional workload during a time everyone on my team is already working 60-80 hour weeks for months straight.

@aj Your team will be fine. Executives will get their bonuses.

Unless you have elite-level subject matter expertise and sole control of key business processes, nobody is going to notice (or care) that you’re gone.

@OP They also don’t care that you’re gone. That’s how all this works.

I’m looking to leave soon as well, which will absolutely put my team in a bad spot. I will feel bad because I genuinely like everyone on the team and know we are all struggling together. But I won’t feel bad for all the upper management constantly cutting our resources, making us go through intense transformation, and making it clear that the future of the company will require a lower headcount.
