Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

I spent the last month assuming I would be RIF’d

Not going to lie, I was looking forward to it. I really don’t wanna go to work tomorrow for this company that has no direction or values.

@cp I wish the Indians would make mistakes. Most of the time, I can't get them to do anything. But I've been told it's my fault.

@bm sadly that’s likely to be the situation anywhere you go. Anytime a new VP comes in, they want to surround themselves with people they know and trust, have worked with in the past, and share their vision and strategy to ensure their success. A new VP keeps a few legacy employees on staff who have historical expertise and existing relationships within the org that the new VP and staff can build off of. The higher level the level of the new leader, the larger the organizational impact will ultimately be. These changes can happen slowly or they can have them quickly, but they always happen.

GM is just not a good leader. He’s created constant churn, chaos, and confusion since the Coviden integration. Every year gets worse hopefully Elliot and and the board will finally see it and make the move that’s long overdue.

@bm

And when the people who are in India make mistakes, we’re the one who are responsible for damage control. Not a sustainable way to run a business.

@ca thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. I’m actively looking for a new job. Would like to devote more time to it but life is so busy.

@cb my manager didn’t know who was being cut on their team until the day before, though they knew someone was. Had to plan for anyone. Great use of time.

I feel the same way ... thought there was good chance of being RIFd this time. My manager even did light transition/summary on many of my projects last Monday. Thought I was toast, but then Nothing happened. And it's really quiet for me still.

@OP I mean this in the nicest way possible, but try to exit on your own terms instead of waiting on a RIF.

Yeah, it might be nice to get severance, but if you’re this unhappy it isn’t worth the compensation to find yourself a role that fits you better at a company that’s more aligned to your interests and values.

You’re not being forced to work here, you’re free to pursue outside opportunities that you’d find more fulfilling.

I truly hope you take this to heart and put in the effort to make yourself happier. Life is too short to settle for a job that doesn’t work for you.

Sadly, I have never been at US based development organization where this threat of being laid off isn't an every other year, or even an every year, event.

@bm well said.

Regarding offshoring jobs, that will only continue to accelerate. One of our leaders straight up told us it’s not a bad idea to look for a new job now because in the next few years most of ours will be shipped overseas. It’s only a matter of when. No one is immune to this, from engineering to legal to research.

Same. They do this to instill fear and chaos.

It is gross to see a VP promoted and two months later they are RIFing so many people under them. A team I know of has had at least 8 US employees RIFed since May 2024 while they hire new people based in Colombia.

I used to see a future here but now I am just surviving day to day and do not care. I know I will be tossed out sooner or later to fund the next US based millionaire VPs promotion and bonus.
