Thread regarding Canon Inc. layoffs

HR Performance Letters

Recently a number of colleagues received performance letters that clearly state they need to be 100% for Q2 or they could be subject to termination based on their performance.

Do you think this is a way for MO to downsize the company without having to pay a severance? I don’t buy for one second that he wants to add more sales representatives. We have downsized starting all the way at the top (I.e ZVP’s/Sr. Dir) but the layoffs never really hit sales.

As a rep, it will be open territory season soon. Get your popcorn ready! I feel bad for my manager. I doubt they will backfill the positions. Managers/directors will get stuck with the quota with little to no production coming out of the territory. I am sure they will be pi---d considering they are paid based on percentage of plan.

@g5 and easy way to tell management where the sun never shines. Time to unionize.

@fr And you write as if you're either a C-suiter or a paid bot.

@sr Ask yourself: what the he-l are these Japanese execs doing in America then? What value do they have? Imposing a Japanese work ethic on American culture and workers will NEVER, EVER work. The sooner they get their heads out of a certain part of their body, then and only will then they will get it. But the damage has been done. Taxpayers in Long Island should revolt against the corporate welfare this company got! They are subsidizing this cr-p!

Ask yourself, how many Japanese employees will be affected = 0

All of the reduction targeting from Canon is to the American workforce!

Look for a better job!

Cr-p like this will only accelerate quiet quitting. Stupid bonehead management move. This company is only boning themselves up the dirt road.

@gs that doesn’t make sense either. The people that were put on letter are on it for q2. If they still can’t get over quota the go on final for all of q3. How does this save the company money?

Unless the rep on letter has more than 13 years with Canon, the letter costs the company more money than laying them off.

How can this NOT be viewed as an easy way to RIF sales reps so severances don't have to be paid out. It's also going to cause more quiet quitting. And the worst part is that the other sales reps who didn't get a letter see the writing on the wall, and won't be trying as hard because it doesn't matter (this is different from seeing underperforming sales reps barely do anything, barely try and linger on the payroll for years because it took forever to fire them. Good sales reps generally don't like those reps). This was step 1 to greatly reduce the headcount in July without having to send out WARN notices.

They raise quotas in a declining market, then “warn” sales under plan. Easy way to RIF without paying severance

You write and speak like a sales rep. You best go stay above 100% because your future is not in writing.

@OP very inaccurate information. I lost two reps because they didn’t agree with the letter. I have already gotten both refills approved to rehire
