Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Question that comes from ignorance…

Hi, I don’t work at the firm anymore. I heard that phone positions only need to come to the office one week a month. I am unfamiliar with what phone rep people deal with, but I know they deal with a LOT of crazy stuff. So, salute to you guys.

That being said, assuming what I heard is true, why do phone rep people only need to go one week? What is it about their work specifically that they can go in just one week? Why not all the other positions, like software engineers? Will phone reps continue to only need to go in one week after 2027?

Thanks

Yup, my fellow level 6 friend and I were half joking about taking phone roles.

Still get the profit sharing, bonus, 401k match, retiree health care deposit.

We’re both closing on retirement so maybe we’ll do the phones together for a year or two?

this is going to sound wild, but for a lot of roles it will make sense financially to demote yourself from some advanced level to a phone rep role if you want to stay at the company. once you factor in commuting etc

I suspect it's two fold. Just like @aa says - tracking number of calls taken, interactions, and other productivity measures is more easily done with a role like a phone rep.

  • turnover is always high in those roles, so offering the hybrid model and continuing to have it results in less turnover because it is added incentive to stay

Phone reps are the largest population, and occupy the most seats. They are also tracked for productivity down to the second. They don’t need to have them in office to monitor them.

@aa su-k but true. Guess they don’t trust anyone. Productivity will plummet for most of us.

I’m not a phone rep but I suspect they have lots of ways of tracking what they’re doing.

So, if they allow them to work from home, they can still have a clear idea of their productivity?

I would guess you worked for the firm…maybe 1 week based on your question

Probably because they want to keep the number of phone reps at the moment, so one week entices them to stay. Meanwhile they want they want everyone else to quit
