Thread regarding BD (Becton Dickinson & Co.) layoffs

Toxic Culture!

Toxic culture lies at the root of the challenges BD is facing today. How did it begin? It started with bias in hiring. Individuals with limited capability were brought in and eventually promoted into leadership roles. These 'leaders' have created an environment where people no longer feel safe sharing honest opinions. Add rampant corruption to that. 'Leaders' have hardly any sense of integrity.

Over time, the situation has only worsened, and there’s little evidence that BD is taking meaningful action to address it. Business teams lack a clear understanding of how operations actually run, while technology teams tend to hide behind jargon rather than communicate effectively.

It’s unfortunate that a handful of poor hiring decisions have led to this level of dysfunction—something we proudly refer to as the “BD Way.” As long as this “BD Way” continues, meaningful change at BD will remain out of reach.

@28g the start of your post is indicative of one of the largest problems at BD - those who actually know how to get things done are considered the low level employees - in fact they are the backbone of project success and as they are systemically eliminated layoff round after layoff round, reorg after reorg, the problem spirals. The inmates are truly running the asylum now

@2r5 perhaps the concept of BD "giving them every opportunity they had in life" is a bit over the top. People tend to perform when they have well defined goals, pathways to achieve them and acknowledgement and reward for having done so. BD long ago stopped providing those things to solidify people's commitment to the company. Outsourcing, layoffs, benefit suspension and reduction, hiring the inexperienced and propping up the useless has destroyed any sense of the company having provided opportunity. Puhlease.

@2r5 what is worse is the BOD does not care, the culture does not affect them as they will get a large pay out in the end. SR VP’s and VP’s will not do anything either since they are to inept. Unfortunately BD is not the company it was 8 or 10 years ago. Instead, the leaders like the toxic culture as then they push people out and they don’t have to pay severance.

@OP The unfortunate reality of BD is that no one seems to be working for the good of the organization—the very organization that gave them every opportunity in life. Instead, most people are focused on personal gain. There’s no real sense of teamwork, and a big reason for that is ineffective leadership that has created this kind of environment. These leaders do not even care how their 'inspirational talks' landing on the audience.

On top of that, the BOD is so disconnected and ineffective that no one is even seriously trying to fix the situation.

100%. Lower level employees who raise concerns over project timelines impacted by the elimination of critical support roles are accused of not supporting leadership decisions and being insubordinate. Way to go, BD...get nasty with the very people you need to get the work done.

@OP sad but true. I was so proud to work for BD at one point. As a cancer survivor I was familiar with BD equipment and devices while I attended chemo and other related dr visits. But in the end, after my layoff, I would say: BD saved me during my cancer journey, but working there almost ki-led me. No joke. toxic dynamics, employees and managers play ruthless games just to keep their job. The longer term employees are part of the problem, they’ve been assimilated to BD company culture, fearful of layoffs every few months, year after year.

Anyone with any brains and aspirations has left BD long ago. Those with half a brain who have stuck around are doing so to milk the company and graze the farmland for XP.

The larger more systemic issue is America itself. America has become a toxic cesspool of hate, fear, corruption, wokeism, oppression, ignorance, apathy, diversions, and manipulation. The class warfare and elitism is out of control. Its probably no different now than before, but it feels like more than ever before the country needs a revolution. Nah, the world needs a revolution against the corrupt people we call our leaders. F@ck this Sh1t!

@OP exactly why BD most leaders are narcissistic and embarrassment for the company at the same time. People at VP level cannot make 3 logical sentences together.

@OP In my neighborhood, a lot of the Asians I meet are incredibly smart — people working at OpenAI, Palo Alto Networks, Apple, and similar companies. But at BD, it sometimes feels like we ended up with the people India didn’t want, and when you add the corruption and internal politics, the situation gets even worse.
Before anyone assumes this is about race, it’s really not. I’ve seen similar issues across every group — Hispanic, Black, White, everyone. The problem isn’t race. The real issue is BD’s hiring culture and reputation. Given how BD is viewed in the market, I honestly don’t think top-tier talent is eager to join the company anymore.

At this point, the reality is simple: either leave or learn to live with it. At my age, switching jobs isn’t easy, so I’ve stopped fighting it and am just waiting for retirement.

@OP I have observed this particular malaise in several meetings of late. Our "distinguished" superiors remain blissfully unaware that their propositions are quite frankly absurde. Yet, because they hold the scepter of authority, anyone of even modest intellect chooses the path of silence rather than speak truth to power.

It has become the déjà vu of TGS meetings: those who possess the least amount of enlightenment continue to chatter on without end.
