Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Taking control

I stopped waiting around after the last round of cuts, and I've been sending out resumes for weeks now. Got a call yesterday from a recruiter at a smaller firm. First interview is Thursday. I'm nervous but it feels good to be doing something instead of just waiting for my turn on the list.

do you think all of them can achieve what you achieved ?

I am not a genius. I put in the time and the effort to not only do the job but keep learning and manage my career. Many call this "adulting" which I believe many could have done before Cisco culture beat the will to live out of them. If I had an advantage it was depression era parents who made clear the importance of being prepared to be self sufficient during the hardest of times.

Imagine all 86K csco employees do the same??

I'm curious if anyone totaled the layoffs over the past 25 years starting with the first 13,000 out the door. 86K/25years would be only 3,440 a year so there is a chance more than 86K have already been forced to make that choice through layoffs at Cisco.

@gv thank you for acknowledging your best advise is no longer viable. please stop gloating.. if you are an achiever, bless you! most are not. Imagine all 86K csco employees do the same?? do you think all of them can achieve what you achieved ?

nice way to show your care, please rub it in.

I'm the other one here who got out but still cares. I've been encouraging people to own their career by building skills and a professional network and to make judicious job jumps which has been the best way to advance and maintain a long career over decades. I've seen the consequences to my friends who just let it ride and many of them were permanently ejected from engineering and I don't want others to suffer the same fate. I'm always down voted for saying these things by people who believe they deserve a free ride and for many the world does not work that way. The sad thing is the way the employment market is changing means even this advice may no longer be a viable path forward for many.

Because I care about the people who aren’t in my position and can’t take the leap I did. Many have mortgages and kids and can’t just up and leave. So yeah, I still follow what’s going on at Cisco and a couple of other previous employers. Seems things have gotten way worse at Cisco from what I’m reading.

Well done dude. I left last year with my dignity intact. No longer prepared to be dog po-p on CR’s shoe and treated like disposable sh-t. I’m a professional engineer and hold CCIE, AWS and RedHat certs and yet Cisco don’t give a fu-k about engineers like me/us. Started my own networking gig and never looked back.
