I was laid off before and when it happened, we had no idea it was coming. I was called into a meeting and that was it. It felt like a punch to the chest. I know layoffs are never good, but I'd rather be notified in advance and do my best to be ready for whatever than live through the same thing once again.

Yes, you do. If nothing else, to get some interviewing practice if you're a bit rusty, like many of us.
What difference does it make? Like do you apply for new jobs preemptively?
