Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

What if Marshall Field's had been retained for the midwest ?

What if Marshall Field's had been retained ? There was so much good will that was accumulated. Since the conversion to Macy's, Chicago and mid-western stores are quite "different" to say the least. After pivoting, they discovered that there was a need for more localization but has it been enough. Look at what Marshall Field's used to be.

Why could they have not refreshed the stores and polished the legacy that was extraordinary. Maybe things were perfect....but wasn't there better possibilities for the future of the trajectory of the business and the long term viability all around ? T

These stores used to have restaurants, beauty salons, unique and curated assortments that were unique and exciting ! What do you think ?

I was working for Federated during the May Company purchase. In the 6 years prior to the purchase, sales at Field's were falling like a rock. Kohl's had just gotten into its nationwide expansion, but in the late 80's and 90's its expansion included significant locations in Minneapolis, Chicago and Detroit. Beginning in the late 90's, it was taking substantial business from Field's. By 2004, Target couldn't sell it fast enough after a failed attempt to turn around the State Street flagship, which was bleeding red ink, and continuing sales declines at its branch locations. It took Macy's until around 2010 to turn those stores around, and now some of Macy's highest volume stores are former Field's locations.

People like to wax nostalgic about old department store names, but Bon-Ton, which went bankrupt around 2018, kept all their regional nameplates, and it didn't save them. So, Federated absolutely made the right decision to go with the nationwide Macy's name. Field's was mostly a run of the mill department store with about a dozen or so upscale locations out of 62. Its clothes were considered dowdy. Now 2 decades later, people just like to romanticize about what in realty really never was.

The name plate was degraded further from the New York Macy’s! Low class private label merchandise!!!!!!! Field gear would outlast any garbage Macy’s can produce

Keeping the nameplate doesn't mean the merch would be any different than a macys store

Stores like fields, Hudson’s and Daytons were a class act, until Target corporation decided to take over the business. That’s when they started to downsize services and merchandise assortments, and fed money to expand the target footprint across the country! Sad But true!

It used to be good, then the Northbrook Court store closed, the first Marshall Field's store to do so in 2019. Then Water Tower Place shuttered in 2021, the second one. Now, the Joliet location seems to be affected in 2027, due to the fact that I am in a position to recieve the closure news early, but have plans to leave like many of you here.
