Thread regarding Canon Inc. layoffs

Tariff Refunds

Now that the Tariff refund portal is open for the as-deemed unconstitutional, "Liberation Day / Reciprocal Tariffs" from a year ago, Canon USA will be fully eligible for likely hundreds of millions in refunds for all the imports from Japan. We know those refunds won't go to the end users (because only Costco is apparently doing that). But the question is, will the employees see any of that? Or will it all just go into Canon coffers as backdated profits to make the shareholders happy?

Sadly, I think we know the answer...

@1dk Solid advice, although nobody "earns more" at this company anymore. Even for high performers, raises end up being worth a half a tank worth of gas money per month. There's literally no motivation to do well here anymore aside from maintaining some monthly income and health insurance.

So, as an employee who was laid-off due to “restructuring” as a result of the Canon’s financial challenges which was primarily positioned as the impact of tariffs, I wonder if my job will be reinstated? Yeah right, I knew that was an excuse then and I also know the term “layoffs” is just another word for “fired.” Canon no longer values long-term employees - very disappointing. For those of you left, BEWARE, as you advance and earn more the target on your back is just getting bigger.

@bq Print equipment is manufactured at the Virginia plant, I should know, I was there for 33 years working my way from a floor position to upper management.
I am certainly NOT supporting their HR related systems, simply stating that yes they do manufacture printer systems there.

@bd none of this print equipment or the supplies are made here in the US, regardless of the OEM company (and it would all cost 3-times as much if it was). So everything bring imported is obvious. But the customers and employees shouldering the burden for the tariffs while the shareholders and executives reap the benefits of the refunds is where the problems are. The rich people do not deserve the refunds. The employees and customers should get EVERY red cent.

First of all, Canon does not deserve one penny of a “refund”. They have shown their true colors that they are not committed to the American workforce. Why should they be awarded / empowered to do more offshoring and importing?

Secondly, if they received a “refund”, they would pi$$ it all away on AI or some other wasteful spending splurge, and not reinvest it properly.

Third, even if they got a “refund”, they will still cry about it be because they need an excuse to explain their sagging profits. It’s a security blanket excuse mechanism. It doesn’t change the fact that they are in a dying industry with a bleak outlook.

@aq Definitely not. We won't see any of it. The executives will probably get fat bonuses for "weathering the storm". Meanwhile sales teams who ended up with less profit and lower commissions /paychecks as a result will be the sacrificial lambs. Shareholders make even more money.
