Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Technical expert = avoid layoffs ?

As much as there are reasons to complain and I have a lot of them myself, the flexibility I have working at Dell's data center teams is kind of amazing compared to my counterparts in GCP, OCI, AWS who work 50-80 hours. I mostly average 30 hours a week.

I make less than those guys but it's still six figures. I get to automate a lot since we have windsurf too now.

I'd like to just climb all the way up to Distinguished Eng or at least Staff Eng.

I'm curious if I just keep being technical, would a potential 30 year path work at Dell ?

Ironically, the best way to not be laid off at Dell is to be mediocre at your job. You do your job and go above and beyond here and there and that's it. You make connections/friends with others, and keep yourself under the radar.

The higher up you get - Minus execs - the bigger target you paint on your back because you are making too much money now.

The other option is to be THE expert in xyz field and be so vital that they wouldn't consider you for a layoff. This option is difficult to achieve and is far from full proof, though.

I've been at Dell for 7 years now but know a LOT of folks who've been there far longer. Layoffs tend to target specific people..

  • Those over 50-55
  • Ultra tenured people - as in been w/ the company for 15+ years because many of them are making a lot of money simply due to raises...
  • i9's and above - those under an i9 get hit as well but it's more saavy to get rid of a handful of i9s+
  • IC's who make a large salary - which I'd assume is close to 200k.

Stay ahead of the curve. Know when the current product you support is on the decline and try to find a position supporting a new product that the company is investing resources in. Rinse and repeat for the next 30 years.

Chart and be responsible for your own 30 career. Don’t align yourself with any company other than YOU!

Good luck 👍

For my group is support it's the highly technical people that are being hit hardest with the layoffs.

Lol. If you have all that technical jargon, you're a target for a layoff. Watch for two new diversity hires to replace you. The only raise you'll get is by moving to another company.

If you have been around long enough, you'll know plans will change.

There was someone who said, everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face. In the next several years, people in tech, will be punched in the face on a regular basis by AI and cost cutting.
