Thread regarding 3M layoffs

What is the plan for 275 with Solventum gone?

It seems like prime real estate for a few divisions. Or are they just going to demolish it all? They wouldn’t sell it to Solventum. Supposedly they tried to buy it but 3M’s price was far too high.

@244 - 2 years ago we were saying goodbye to 2,500 coworkers being layed-off and inheriting 2-3 additional job positions. We must be id—ts to have missed that private utility comment [sarcasm].

So many id--ts on this form.

Solventum could not buy 275 because all the utilities are linked to 3M. It’s illegal to serve as a private utility company in MN.

This was mentioned in a town hall around two years ago.

45 years ago someone did a lab coat consolidation that saved $15,000 per year. That person was barely a level 6 hourly. Now you have some Vp making a big deal over saving $75k on uniforms? What a joke.

But…but…..the little dots on the Pareto chart are trending upwards! The $75k is real!

Next thing BB will figure out is to save a few bucks not lighting up one of the building offices like a Christmas tree. Scrooge indeed!

The Campus used to be packed with cars and labs were churning out new products all the time. The GE guy came in and imposed Sick Sigma on 3Ms vaunted research labs to make a name for himself until he bolted for Boeing before people could see the zhitshow left behind.

What a frigging pile of dung this company has become!

Would make sense to fill up 275 and demolish some of those dirty old quad buildings, especially 220.

The Triad was leased to Solventum because they didn't want to own it. If they had bought it we probably would have had to demolish the skyway connected to 280.

I recently talked with someone in IT who was in the Triad installing a new network, so I can only assume there will be someone moved in to use that network. I don't see the labs sitting unused, or the offices, some of which were nicely redone prior to 2020.

You’re worried about specific buildings!? Instead focus on if you have a job next month and how quickly 15 acres can become the next TIF district or redevelopment project for public housing and appear on the next City Council agenda.

Solventum could declare bankruptcy and 3M pick it up cheap and move it into 275. Or 3M could declare bankruptcy and Solventum pick them up cheap and move back to 275 and run the show from there.

There was a decent plan for the entire campus right before the pandemic. It did include the demo of many buildings. The plan was modified further during the pandemic based on awareness of how much smaller the campus could become. In the days before RTO. Then that leader was pushed out and the plan died completely.

@OP

At one point there were plans well in development to move the occupants of 250 complex into 275 and 260, then tear 250 complex down. Not sure BB would actually spend the money to do it today.

The plan? The plan? Do you even 3M? Seriously if you think anyone if the ivory tower has a plan you are crazy. I guarantee they have zero plan and are just flying by the seat if their pants. They won't move buildings because that costs money, and dear Lord they are cheap. I heard a lot of our equity is past it's useful life but we can't replace it because there hasn't been a capital plan worth the paper it is written on in years. Engineering and strategy leadership do just enough to no get fired with no real change. Everyone is so afraid of making a decision that a simple purchase for materials or supplies can take a week.

What's the plan? Come on, if you've worked at mother mining for longer that 30 minutes you should know there hasn't been a plan in years.

Should just demo the entire quad and put all the admin folks into 275. Sell the land along 94 to the met council for another bus depot to hold the many riders of the new bus line.
