What's the point of building skills?

Or working hard, for that matter? There's no path upward. Promotions happen under circumstances that are genuinely baffling, and never seem tied to actual performance. Meanwhile, the real backbone of the teams, the impressive professionals, get passed over every time. I'll go further - being qualified practically disqualifies you from moving up.

Taking Credit for the Accomplishments of Others (TCAO) is a valued skill in EM.

So valued that TCAO should be listed in the new skills database and level 4 should be required to get promoted to with 2 CL levels of your Ultimate Potential.

@gj Exactly. Some people are so desperate to perform that even during lunch break they start bragging about their accomplishments. Give me a break — it’s lunch, not a TED Talk. Socially awkward animals.

@ga Yeah, I see it too.
The thing is, I just don’t enjoy the people at this company. They’re all weird and awkward, and believe me, I’ve tried to overcome it. Even small talk is annoying. I do ok in a work setting, but the idea of spending any personal time or even minor chitty chat with these people outside of work feels cringe.
They’re all so “collegiate,” like they were raised in a conference room. It comes off kind of fake. They seem nice, but something is just… off.
Every time there’s a bowling day or some weird team building event, I schedule dental work to get out of it.
Luckily, my work quality has been solid enough they have kept me on, where I’ve found my lane. But there’s definitely a firm ceiling on my career due to personal choices and lack of networking. Though I certainly don’t envy the higher-ups. I know what it took to get there, lots of luncheons and scheduled “fun.”

Building the right network is far more effective than building any skills.

I have seen id--ts destroy all that they touch but get bounced from job to job, their blunders covered up every time, and move all the way to VP without a single skill, except for PowerPoint editing, taking credit for the work of others.

Pretty much if you are too good at your job they will hold you back any chance you might have to move up.

Sorry, you are yo valuable yo lose in your current role is what I have been told multiple times over the years.
