Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Friendly advice for the new year

I see so many young people making the mistake of overworking themselves and taking on other people's tasks in hopes of fast-tracking their careers. Don't. Unless you know the right people, it will not help. What will happen is that you will become so indispensable in your current role that your manager will keep you there because there would be a vacuum if they move up. You think you're helping yourself but instead, you're setting yourself up to fail.

The advice the op is giving is bad advice. Contribute above your level and if you don't get promoted schedule meetings with your boss, and their boss. If, over time you don't get rewarded find another company. To pre-emptively slack because your boss MIGHT steal your credit is stupid. I retired after more than two decades at Qualcomm and know how these things really work.

Ave (op)- you are a fool. You reflect all that is wrong with the entitled culture. What ever happened to pushing hard and getting ahead? Yeah, I know, but but but, they are not fair to me. Grow up! You and others like you will be the first to get laid off.

If you know the right people you can fail at everything you do and still get promoted! As long as you fail with your manger you are fine! If you out perform your manger - your head will be on the chopping block!
