I see a lot of people throwing around Gerry’ Horgan’s name and it needs to stop. Gerry was just as smart as he was tough. He would have been very proud of CWA and his local 1103. Through His sacrifice free medical continued for over 20 years , and when the day eventually came to pay the payment was very modest. Gerry would have know that times had changed and that the company had changed. This was no longer a company that was mandated and regulated to deliver dial tone as the only means of communication, but it was a company that was competing for market share against all of the cable companies and cell phone companies and now satellite companies. . The fact that the caps were bargained into the contract in 2008 and didn’t pierce them for pre Medicare retirees until 2026 was over 36 years from his ultimate sacrifice. No one likes to pay more. Verizon is still paying the bill of over 38 thousand dollars a year for a family plan of retired member pre Medicare and that is unbelievable as compared to any other industry and has everything to do with Gerry’s sacrifice still going strong. Every year on August 15 Gerry’s local 1103 still gathers and remembers him and tells stories of Gerry from his best friends and his family and the tradition continues
So rather than invoking Gerry’s name as a sound bite. I would invite anyone down to learn about him through the people that knew him best and were there with him and have truly never forgotten.
