Updated RTO policy

My personal PC and work comp are next to each other so while reading a post on here, I chose to look up the RTO policy as it stands right now.

"As we transition to the enterprise platform on May 1, 2026, individual and leader dashboards on Workday will be retired. However, the expectation remains the same: if you are designated as on onsite team member, you are expected to work a regular day from your Dell office five days a week. While attendance will not be actively shared at the individual or leader level, this expectation is non-negotiable."

This is CLEARLY part of MAVERIC considering it's "supposed" to roll out in May and it sounds like Workday is going away? If so, will we have visibility on whatever the new tool is?

Or does this mean that they are no longer going to track us... Which sadly I don't think is the case.

I feel like one of these things...

A: They (EXEC leadership) doesn't want us - or managers - to know how many days we have in office - so we can't "plan" any days off or get warnings from our managers to go in more often..

B: They make it seem as if they aren't tracking us - but they actually are

C: They decided that of those required to be onsite, the majority are obeying and now they no longer care to track, as they "whipped us into obedience."

@vy And you know what, that's fine by me. If I last another 2 years here, that'll mean I've had a 6 year tenure here, and lasted 3yrs after RTO while fully remote. Frankly, those numbers are fine with me because at that point I'll go one of two ways:

A: Having met my CoastFIRE goals, I'll go be a goose farmer or something
B: If I'm not ready to be a goose farmer yet, I'll just go and get a promotion somewhere else.

Until then, I've got a book of business that goes brrrrr like the best of JPow's money printers, and I'm gonna let the dollarydoos roll in until they aren't.

@q5 Yup. Had a 1x1 with my director the other day and was told he had to let go 3 people go and said that it was primarily due to them being remote.

@hb Hey man, I fought it for a bit also - got a medical exemption for 8 months back when RTO went into effect, which was great! - but, I 100% promise you that anybody who is full remote and doesn't live local to an office and/or won't relocate, WILL be on the chopping block in the coming years.

Dell has made it blatantly obvious they want ALL employees local to an office AND coming into office. Heck, they don't even offer remote positions anymore, and remotes aren't eligible for promotion or internal movement either.

Obviously it will take years to get rid of all the remotes but they absolutely will, slowly but surely...

I'm an hour drive from RR and it SU-KS but, as long as we go into office 5 days/week and do our job well, we are less likely to be let go versus those who are full remote.

Point is is that at some point, remotes will be non-existent. You are buying time but that time will run out at some point.

Option C. But they are targeting remote..to reduce budget as well. Two people on my team are targeted for wfr only because they are remote no other reason.

@d2 I successfully fought RTO and am at no risk. Quit being a boomer d0rk and acting like it's some sort of unstoppable force.

Easy ways to fight RTO:
Distance during rush hour traffic (easiest)
Doctor's note claiming anxiety from crowded spaces/traffic/etc (gives 1yr)
Just stop coming in

@aj Yeah, haven't heard of anyone being let go for RTO either but, IMPO i feel it's totally unfair to let go anybody who's not fully abiding by it considering the fact that 50% of the company is still FULL REMOTE. IMO, until they get rid of remote employees, they can't really justify firing someone who only goes in 3 days/week...

@bz
I think you are spot on with everything except #4 - time in office part. The official RTO policy does not state how long you MUST be in office - I suppose it technically says a "regular work day" - and at least with my leadership, we have never been told to be IN office for any set amount of time. We've been told to make sure we badge in 5 days/week and that's it.

Maverick is NOT ready, or anywhere close to ready and I know this 1st hand, but it WILL be rolled out and the poor folks who are forced to use the half broken tools will suffer.

@aj People aren't being layed off for not meeting RTO requirements, they're getting an impossible to meet PIP and a termination letter. Dell is an ultra numbers driven company, to the point no one in leadership even tries to understand the story the numbers are telling. Rest assured every last one of us is being tracked is ways we don't even know exist.

This is what's happening:

  1. Workday is being deprecated to save money.
  2. They know Maverick is nowhere near ready to track anything so they make up some bogus "expectation" B.S.
  3. They can still track via badge reader db.
  4. They only care about time in office to justify laying you off.
  5. It's not a out increasing productivity, never was.
  6. Maverick will be a MASSIVE CLUSTER FU-K rollout. They're already trying to do damage control.
  7. Dell is incapable of developing or integrating with enterprise software solutions.

If the Dell One Way system is anything like the lack luster training, May 1 is going to be a cluster f$&k. That training had zero to do with what we do daily. I am failing to see how it will help. Would have been nice if they actually asked the people who do the work what we need and how to streamline it. As usual, it was designed and built in a vacuum.

Obviously the new sh---y tools can’t track it and they are so far behind that they can’t waste time on integrating it. If they really want to know they will look at the badge software and use that to lay you off.

To be honest I don’t think Dell cares anymore. I’d think option C would fit. I’m not aware of Dell laying off anyone simply because they didn’t meet RTO requirements. If so I’d be surprised even though the threats were there. I am in the office 6 hours a day then WFH the rest. Nobody has told me to stop.

@a1 This is easily tracked though. When you request PTO, that request generates an email to your direct manager, as well as to HR. Your manager sees the email, approves/deny's it, and that's that.

Long story short, there is a paper trail on the managerial side. I've never been denied PTO but maybe there is an email that tells you it was denied? I have no clue.

Either way, I agree it's a good idea to screen shot your stuff before it transitions or whatever.

@a1 Good point but, that is tracked via HR already but will 100% take a screen shot of my hours when it's closer to May 1st, just in case.

There is NO defined statement that says anything about WHAT a regular workday is. No statement that says we MUST be in office for 8 hours. No statement that says how long we have to be in office. It just says a "regular day."

What, exactly is a "regular" day, though? My regular day is working in office for 2 hours and then going home to finish the day. I will continue this until they say they track how long you are in office - which I honestly HIGHLY doubt will ever happen.

Unfortunately, it's incredbily easy to track "time in office" via a simple Splunk querey... but, many people have more than one work computer - I have two - so, I could theoretically juswt leave 1 in the office 24/7...

It might be best to make copies of your accrued time off and vacation days the week before WorkDay goes away.
