Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Individual layoffs coming - Expect the Unexpected!!

GL31 here - Execs will conduct individual layoffs throughout the year. This will be in addition to group layoffs of misc teams. In cases where there’s only 1 individual from a team being RIFd, this will be a 1/1 call w direct leader.

Meeting w leaders was 3/19 after massive layoffs complete to give notice of ‘next steps’. They are aware employees are expecting notices & the goal is to keep the next dates ‘confidential’ and have the ‘element of surprise’. Expect the unexpected as more deep cuts are coming.

My friend & peer is GL32. Informed GL30-32 will be part of the ‘individual’ layoffs as to not cause alarm to their teams. Expect sudden ‘retirements’, ‘spending more time with their families, pursuing other opportunities’, etc. But in the end, we all know they were booted & forced to leave. It just sounds better when it’s presented as though it was their choice vs forced.

Buckle up - lots more cuts on the horizon.

Not a single "leader" is present in this entire circus. All just wannabe and never was

Fake news. Yeah there's "coaching" of managers on the way out but they're not RIF'd off schedule. They go with the rest of them.

I've heard something similar that was mentioned - leadership is concerned at the number of useful people leaving voluntarily. They lie about how bad our client retention is, how bad commercial sales are, totally dishonest about the shedding of members at UHC.

You'll never hear how we're losing the company to EHRs and clients themselves making their own superior products. You're certainly not going to hear the truth about leaders quitting.

@OP So which grade levels are being targeted in these individual layoffs? The GL 31? Or below that?

@a8 maybe it varies by department but this year my team (l29-30, boss is 31) got 1% raise, RRP funded at 68%, and no RSUs.

I wouldn't be so sure L30+ you work with got anything but a rude awakening like the rest last month. I expect that as prior cycle RSUs vest in the coming weeks we see a mass exodus of people once they sell the shares.

Greed & Green $ is king!
All off the backs of hard working employees. UHG/Optum has lost great employees. They are too stupid to realize they are only helping their competitors. Teams remaining are steadily looking for another job with competitors or in a completely different field of work.

@a6 Coached to exit? Absolutely. There are all kinds of trainings for 30-31 and 32+ that few people see. 30+ are let go as part of regular rounds.

Smoke and mirrors is the idea of "off cycle" or "individual" layoffs. Nope. If 30+ are RIF'd, they're cut along with everyone else in a mass layoff. Some SLT and certainly ELT are a different story because they're on employment contracts but not 30-32.

We have a TON of voluntary departures at 30+ which destroys faith in leadership and the company. Why are people with $150-200k base, 20% bonus, and RSUs (SG30 and up from there) leaving cushy jobs? It's not contrition or a change in personal politics, they are privy to the writing on the wall.

@a5 if you think a cent of money from layoffs is going to flow down, there is no hope in curing your naivety. They laid off an unprecedented amount in 2025 and then cut the 401k match and gave 0-2% raises when inflation was 3%.

GL30+ aren’t suddenly retiring. They are fired & that’s the nice way to bow out gracefully. They are being coached on how to exit, what to say & threatened with NOT what to say. If they spill the beans on what they know, they’ll lose severance & likely to be sued. It’s all smoke & mirrors.

It’s about time!! Cut the execs $ and give the money to those actually working. Enough of the business travel (ie: family vacations) , business dinners (ie: parties at company expense), car rental (luxury cars & SUVs), travel to offshore sites (family vacations), etc.

Enough is enough. Let them go.

Company is a sh!tshow, no path for Optum under current leadership. SH cares about UHC, he'll burn the rest. Some 30-32s and all SLT/ELT know this. Most 30+ are heads down and don't know or care what's going on, by design.

SLT BS on "sudden ‘retirements’, ‘spending more time with their families, pursuing other opportunities’, etc." and this new idea of "individual layoffs" is occasionally true, but mostly inaccurate. 30+ RIFs will continue as part of mass rounds. March/April is quitting season after bonus hits, stock awards vest, and people accept external offers.

SLT/ELT is making cover for the MANY PEOPLE in leadership voluntarily leaving. More than normal. It's really bad. Good/mediocre people are heading for the exits while dead weight is kicked out, multiplying the chaos regular RIFs cause. Then the remnants get newly tagged to sh!tty leaders and then they quit.

RIFs make people buckle down and keep working. Mass voluntary departures, especially at 32+ destroys morale and faith in the company, and puts workers under the cr-ppy people that SH, et al keep around. You're seeing smokescreen.

Haven’t been here a year as a L30 and have blacklisted the recruitment agency that placed me here.

This is without question the least competent and most reckless/disorganized entity I have worked for or worked with.
