U.S. Work Authorization & Sponsorship

At Medtronic, we are committed to fostering an environment where employees can thrive and make a meaningful impact. In alignment with our enterprise-wide workforce planning approach, U.S. work authorization sponsorship (H-1B, TN, J, etc.) is offered exclusively for Principal-level roles and above, where specialized expertise aligns with long-term business needs. Roles below the Principal level require candidates to possess unrestricted U.S. work authorization at the time of hire and for the duration of employment.

The US worker is in trouble. Places like Ireland, India and China have caught up in areas like product development and theyt are way cheaper and many of these places have great R&D tax incentives. You are going to see most technical workers in US development have their jobs offshored at the big strategics. What happened to mfg in the 90's and the 2000's is now happening in R&D. And the US government has been asleep at the wheel regarding R&D incentive policy.

@12z

They are cheaper. Therefore, higher profits for the executives to tout to Wall street. There isn't much to understand.

Since when do H1B visa holders hold expertise in FDA regulated processes? Maybe a technical position with experience but these are new graduates coming to manage the FDA regulated tools with zero experience. But hey, they work cheaper than me and have a master degree from another country. Make that make sense.

First off, regardless of administration, it’s been hard to justify H1B for candidates without an advanced degree. The word ‘specialized’ can be vaguely interpreted but it’s been hard to justify that there’s not been entry level candidates that don’t have the same skill sets that require sponsorship.

And as of September, new H1B applications require an $100k payment to the government.

When there’s an overhead cost of at least $100k (plus the additional legal costs of application) it really makes zero sense for an associate/II/senior role.

Actually if you review the org charts, Senior is the lowest level for a FTE employee. MDT only wants season folks not AI resume newbees.

So what I am understanding is Medtronic wants to hire principle level talent for way lower pay and they can get away with that using H-1B.
