Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Why force people into the office when the work is still online?

Return to office policies feel disconnected from how many teams actually work now. A lot of teams are spread across different cities and countries. Even when people sit in the same building, most of their meetings are still on video calls. The day ends up looking exactly like a remote workday, except people had to commute to do it.

It creates a strange situation... Now, peeps spend time and money getting to the office just to log into virtual meetings anyway. The actual work process does not change much. Communication tools, documents, and collaboration ALL still happn online. At that point the office becomes more symbolic than practical, and people start questioning what the real purpose of the policy is.

They are trying to get you to quit so they don’t have to pay severance.

That’s it. That’s the reason.

@fk If you are ok with is then why complain about it on the internet?

@bg I am very aware there are routes I can take that avoid toll roads but, they are the slowest routes and I'm ok spending $100/week on gas+tolls to get to the office faster, then leave faster.

96 miles round trip to go to an office that contains not a single person I work with. My manager is remote and lives three timezones away. My team is spread around the globe and mostly remote. It's pointless and a waste of time and money... but I'm kind of use to it now. Just listen to music and podcasts... At some point you just have to get on with it.

It is easy; they want you to quit! It is a lot cheaper for you to quit than for them to give you a severance package. This is why they mess with your compensation, put metrics on you, and put you on pips.

You again?! Complaining about the same sh-t week after week. Get over it. I get it. It su-ks to waste time and gas on the drive. It feels like a waste of time to be in the office. It su-ks to do something you don’t want to do. Go cry to your manager. Or better yet, feel free to send a direct email to Michael your complaints. I’m sure he will reconsider this RTO mandate if enough people complain.

@bh Does anyone collab in person anymore? Seems like everyone I need to collab with is at least 2 time zones away if not on a different continent.

My favorite is that everything is a “ticket” at Dell that you need to log but they want in person meetings and collab. Ok, I collab in person then need to log the ticket? MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!!

@bf You di realize google maps has a feature that will find a route that doesn't use toll roads right? No way in he-l am I spending $100/week to be in office no matter who is there. I guess I might feel different though if that wasn't nearly 10% of my paycheck.

Yeah dude, I have no idea but my honest guess is that it's a way for them to fire people who don't abide by this RTO policy. I drive 60 minutes to work and about 80 miles round trip, and spend about 20 bucks a week on toll roads that i HAVE to use, to go to an office that only 1 other coworker goes to, only to join virtual meetings...

I'm in an org that has people spread across the globe. The 6 years I've been here, I've met my manager ONCE and he willingly drove - on his own dime - to meet a handful of us. Now that we have a new manager who lives states away, I know I'll never meet him. I'll never meet anyone on my team except for ONE person.

I wouldn't mind spending $100 week to go in if MOST of my team was also there - manager included! - but cmon, I spend that money and time to go sit next to someone for 90 minutes before we both leave and go home lol. I spend an hour in the car to get there, then spend MAYBE 2 hours in office, then spend another hour driving home. That's two hours of drive time Dell is paying for for me to do nothing.

My honest guess though, is that they will roll out a 3 day RTO policy... They've hit their employee count number, they've had some solid quarters and things are going well. One can dream, anyways...

Because they want to make your life a living he-l so you quit your job at Dell all on your own. That way they don't have to pay severance.

@ag

Or, miserable and demotivated workers stay on but become actively disengaged. Not sure that's an ideal outcome for Dell but what do I know?

Because if they make you miserable, you’ll quit and they won’t have to pay you out through WFR?

You’re streets behind if you can’t read between the lines here.
