Thread regarding 3M layoffs

RTO is ki-ling our talent pool

Yet another talented colleague who was hired in the remote-first era has left. They couldn't get promoted without agreeing to move to Minnesota. They were hired in the "Work Your Way is permanent!" era, and were assured during the hiring process that they could get promoted without having to relocate. Our current policy says that exceptions may be made for key positions, which my colleague's absolutely is, but our EVP is gutless and afraid of doing anything that would anger the CEO. I don't know whose retirement I'm anticipating more.

@jq I think it's pretty clear that GBS isn't going to exist for much longer. The SVP is just there to oversee dividing it up and handing the reigns to Finance or IT.

@af those executive assistants to managers of executive assistants and beyond are the lingering protected from bdg 220. Most were forced to retire this year and those remaining are in survival mode.

@af
Being a Legacy hire, I remember my grandpa telling me of the great geniuses that worked here in the 50s-60s. Some would live here. Literally. Working on new ideas, trying them out, figuring out what they did wrong. Wandering the halls, muttering to themselves. Labs a mess, but a mess meant progress. Always thinking and working towards the next thing big thing. You won't see that anymore. So, why not let people work however they want? Somebody ice-fishing or taking their cat on a walk might just be coming up with a way to regurgitate PFAS.

I agree to a point. However, there is so much toxicity in the division I work in, I prefer to work from home.

This group is allowed to work from are homes and managers must go to there offices.

@a9 How ridiculous you are, always thinking you know more than others. The indiscriminate use of ‘they’ and of possessive pronouns in general, ‘going to their home’ instead of just ‘going home’, is a feature of the last decade, from useless woke brainwashed people trying to 'make a point'.

@a9 All this being true, this is modern bull$hit to justify modern debunked ideologies.

Not following this whole remote work thing. Factory floors and labs are where the money is made. Not some made up jobs. Maybe sales and admin, maybe some brainiac that spews out the latest and greatest new 3M product, but it still has to go from idea to an actual product to production for sale. 3M is top heavy enough with assistants to assistants to managers of assistants to directors of assistant directors of directors of assitant VPs. Cut the fat. Throw the chaff. "Lean And Mean" should be Billy's battle cry.

@a6 I can see this in my future, because although I'm okay with working in the office, this level of dysfunctional BS is really hard for me to tolerate.

@a3
"They" and related forms are commonly used to refer to someone whose identity is intentionally not revealed. The use of "they" with a singular antecedent goes back to Middle English hundreds of years ago. Anyone who was paying attention in middle school knows this.

I left because of RTO as well. New company, fully remote, 4% pay decrease, happy as can be.
