Thread regarding Solventum layoffs

Legendary Audrey Sherman just left

Solventum just lost their star researcher and patent producer, I noticed she’s been sharing jobs at other health companies on LinkedIn the past month for other Medical Surgical researchers and engineers that were all laid off in the last month. I feel like this really guts what was left of this company that was worth holding onto, I hope others see the direction this is going and look for their own exit.

Hope the best for her - an incredible technical mentor and inspiration to so many across Solventum and 3M for years 😢

@w9 Let’s be honest, her only talent was stealing other people’s work, promoting it as her own and using it to advance her own career. People at 3M were glad to see her leave. It sounds like she continued her unethical ways at Solventum and not too many people were sad to see her gone from there either.

@OP In my perception her contributions as a mentor, educater & brand icon in the more recent past were bigger than her actual innovations. Nevertheless, agree with what others have said: hard to make it any clearer that foundational R&D is not our focus any more.

Yes, it is a massive and apparently limitlessly funded org, but they don´t really do innovation.

I worked with her for many years at 3M, we were in the same group. She has a talent for finding out about ideation sessions and attending them (sometimes uninvited), so she can be named as inventor on any patents that come out of those sessions without having to do actual work. That angered the people who had to work for months or years to turn the idea from concept to product only to see this person who participated in one meeting take credit for the outcome. It sounds like she continued along the same lines at Solventum.

She was laid off. She was also deeply unpopular in the MSB R&D lab and had made very little commercial impact for her job grade.

@eq Bryan has become a huge disappointment from what HCBG thought they were getting when he was first announced.

I'm not sure if acquisitions are his plans since I think his strategy is simply to look busy and say corporate mumbo jumbo both to employees and investors. Any acquisitions may be questionable anyway since he would likely be buying a company that is run by his buddies. That way his yacht club cronies get a huge capital gain when he unwisely pays 2x true market value.

Sadly, this was the one spin from 3M that had the most potential for growth and market presence. There's an old saying. A great leader can't save a company that is destined for irrelevance. (SOLV isn't going away in total but will clearly be broken up or sold off). Meanwhile, it takes just one incompetent (and selfish) leader to destroy a company that would otherwise be destined for greatness. That kind of leader brings in more leaders who accelerate the descent (Heather, etc.). The incompence of these leaders burdens everyone under their weight.

For those toiling away in Eagan, drive by the place 5 years from now and it will be occupied by some kind of AI company.

Solventum will go off into pieces having never paid a penny in dividends. And the name will go down quietly into corporate graveyard like Imation.

Big loss for Solventum, but then again, maybe their business model has zero inhouse product development and instead will focus on acquisitions.

Whoever snaps up Audrey will benefit, this is the first time she is available on the market in 40 years! Her strength is that when she is placed in an R&D organisation with many different development/technology projects, she can quickly see how each individual unrelated projects can combine to form a new product/technology!

Two division scientists from Dental were also let go. Both were exceptional scientists who made immense contributions to the core dental business. I wounder how many senior scientists are left at Solventum.
