Before Coterra there was Cabot and Cimarex. Cabot had a very different work culture from Cimarex similar to other Houston companies. It was laid back and less formal.

Don’t forget the traffic and security
@fy Don't forget the difference is housing cost between Houston and OKC.
Seems like CEO is eager to move to Houston so he can remake the company to his liking. So the question of Devon's current culture is irrelevant to the go-forward company. I would expect things to return to the WPX way of doing things, which had a very top-down culture and not a ton of IC empowerment.
Get ready for Houston. The crazy traffic, dangerous roads and if you get laid off here…there are 4000 other unemployed oil workers.
@OP it’s like any big company. Completely depends on your leadership chain. Our CEO just spent 20 minutes in a townhall talking about how excited he is to lead the go forward company and that’s it’s so amazing for him that his spot is already taken care of. Zero compassion in his speech to a room full of people about to be laid off or uprooting their families.
Lower level leaders and individuals contributors are mostly cool & easy to work with, competent. That said, looking forward to severance over moving to Houston.
If one of the goals of this move is draining the swamp, what’s left should be great from a culture perspective.
If that’s not a goal, I’d read up on dark triad personalities and how to deal with them.
Right now, it’s not a good place to work from a culture standpoint. Everything has changed, and it’s very much about who you know, not performance or leadership.
The WPX side is still operating the same way they always have doing things under the table, with poor safety practices and many employees still openly compare how disorganized and unsafe it feels compared to Devon. That alone says a lot.
Leadership is another major issue. We currently have an incompetent superintendent in Hobbs whose focus seems to be on moving friends into management roles rather than making sound decisions or supporting the operation. Because of this, a lot of good, hardworking people are seriously considering leaving.
If you’re offered a package, I strongly recommend taking it. It may save you a lot of unnecessary stress and headaches down the road.
One unfortunate pillar of the culture is keeping the status quo at all costs. A manager can be seen as a net negative to their own leadership but kept around in the name of continuity. With that in mind there are two cultures; the company culture and your manager's culture. Overall company culture on paper is as good as anywhere, but a cr-ppy boss will ruin it.
- 1 on HR needing a boot, that group is long overdue for a makeover starting with the director.
I’ve never worked in a more toxic, empire building, siloed environment in my entire career.
Devon's current environment is one of favoritism and pets. Lots of great people here, the management, not so much. Looking forward to seeing some of these so called leaders get what they've got coming to them after making their departments miserable for years! Equally as excited to see the HR team get an overhaul! Other than that, great place to work.
