Verizon is so desperate to stop the bleeding they got their buddies at the FCC (many Former executives of Verizon now work for the FCC) to agree to force people to stay by locking their phones for a year. Unreal

Only a dunderhead would buy a locked phone. Save up and just buy the phone outright... like most people do in the rest of the world.

This is d-mb, you can have your devices unlocked once they’re paid fully, or if you buy them full retail. Nothing different than what any other carrier does.
